The article doesn't say that subby. It sounds like this scam was where they charged the customer full price then entered it in the system as a discount and pocketed the difference.

The article is pretty light on details but I'm curious how it would work without getting caught immediately. Unless passengers were paying in cash but I didn't think any of the airlines accepted cash anymore.

Really though, if our elected leaders, elected to a powerful position, can enrich themselves through deception, why can't I?

It's not as if the folks who paid for an upgrade didn't get upgraded.

My wife is as flight attendant so I fly standby.
The secret to getting upgraded to a better seat is discreetly placing chocolate or other treats on the counter as you check in at the gate.
But make sure they see you do it.

Oh. That's far less nefarious than I thought TFA was.

I thought the check-in agent was acting as a go-between for sex workers at the arrival site, and the upgrade was just their cover story.

Real life is so mundane sometimes.

When you commit fraud, you get 20 years.

When a bank commits fraud on a massive scale, they give the government a 20% cut.

If I'm at the terminal gate/ticketing counter trying to get an upgrade or a ticket and a Gate Attendant says to CashApp them a $167 and they'll hook me up, I would think I was getting a great deal. I would've checked the Airline's app already, of course.

The odds of them overcharging me for $167 is pretty slim.

I've heard of something similar. A little kindness goes a long way.

CSB: I woke up during an overnight flight and decided to get drunk to pass the time. I walked to the back and asked for 3 or 4 shots and this one flight attendant said "I can only *wink* sell you one *wink wink*, sir". She then poured two into my cup and told me to go sit down and she'll bring it to me. When she walked back she poured the third in and handed me the fourth. Boy oh boy I had a great time watching Sonic the Hedgehog 2 lol. Jim Carrey is hilarious after a couple drinks.

Turns out that she didn't even charge me! When I went to get a final shot, another lady told me the system was down lol. I hope I didn't get the cool attendant in trouble.

/She looked like she was drinking, too

Huh. That makes sense, especially considering how many of them are giant ham beasts standing and wheezing behind the counter.

Yep. Airlines got greedy, underpaid people, forced them to work in dangerous conditions, cut benefits, then act surprised when those same employees "steal" from them by undercutting them on the same scam.

I used to work for American Airlines (pre 9/11) and still had friends who worked there when the shiat hit the fan. They were asked to sacrifice benefit, even 'volunteer hours' (ie work for free) to help the carrier stay afloat.

Then when they returned to profitability, all of the bonuses and profit sharing when to upper management and the people who worked and sacrificed got nothing

Honestly I may just do this to be nice. They have pretty intense days and I really do try and be kind to them. They do an incredibly job of being kind to whoever they're serving.

Huh?

You don't get your actual seat assigned until you check in at the gate when flying standby.
The computer will assign it, but the gate agent can work magic if properly motivated with charm and carbs.

A few days ago when I went to the airline web site pre-assign my seats, there were none available at the level of the ticket I had purchased.  I either had to pay for each seat (4 of them ... 4 legs of travel) or take my chances at the airport.  This is for travel in about a month.

I do not condone theft, but what is this ^ ?

Aha! Thanks. Never been in the situation. Other than "we'll give you a voucher if you give up your seat," I did always wonder what business people had at the counter.

May your travels continue to be blessed by the power of thinking of others. :)
