Interesting that Republicans are not only not coming to his aid, they're starting to put on big boy trousers and actually point out that he shouldn't have had the docs, and that there is a legal process for declassifying them that does not not involve telepathy.

How in the capital-F would they know? They don't think either.

Republicans now realizing they need to cut Trump loose before they are out of jobs.

I can't believe "classified documents can't be declassified by wishful thinking" is something that even has to be stated. But in the age of right-wing propaganda, internet trolls, and especially Trump and his ramblings, nonsensical arguments abound and too many people accept them.

They're just scared that some president will think all of their closed records are now public.

2022-09-22 11:27:39 PM
They draw the line at "it's legal if the Republican president does it." That's good enough for them.

Like, for instance, US District Court Justices.

This is what happens when your power is based on illusion.  As the illusion fades, so does your power.  Just like the ridiculously self-reinforcing rise, once the fall starts it will only accelerate.  Now honestly I expected this to start around the first month of Trump's presidency, but it turns out I routinely overestimate humanity.

Essentially, he's so obviously farked that supporters are worried he's no longer invincible, so they're not as enthusiastic - which makes him more obviously vulnerable, which further weakens support.

Eventually, anyone who can get away with it will deny they ever supported him.  BUT, unless their noses are rubbed in it and they're punished, they're just going to move on to the next figurehead who supports their agenda and be just as much of a political and social problem as they have been so far.

Okay Trump thought about it and declassified it, no proof needed.

But that means Biden thought about it and reclassified it on Jan 20th, no proof needed.

"I think the concern is about those being taken from the White House absent some way of declassifying them or the fact that there were classified documents removed - without sort of the appropriate safeguards," the South Dakota Republican (John Thun) continued, adding, "I think that is what the Justice Department is getting at."

Wow, check out the big brain on that guy.

2022-09-22 11:34:59 PM
Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and top Trump ally, also dismissed the former President's claims.
"The process is probably more complicated than that," he said of Trump's claim that he could declassify anything by thinking about it.

"Also," he went on to add, "water is probably wet, the Pope is probably Catholic and bears probably shiat in the woods."

Trump

2016: In my administration, I'm going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. No one will be above the law.

2022: I declassified the documents I stole by simply thinking about it. Executive privilege! Planted by the FBI! 'They' moved those boxes, I didn't know what was in them. My office is a SCIF! I'm still the president!!!

Anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together knows that the lifeblood of both government and law are paperwork and recordkeeping.  Classification markings are the written legal record of a document's classification status.  While a president can declassify nearly anything, until the paperwork is done and the records are changed, it remains classified.

This. Even from a basic common sense angle, without a process, how the fark can anyone tell that the shiat is declassified? Especially after said President leaves the office, and thus loses his ability to declassify anything.

AND EVEN THEN, the classification shiat is a red herring, because those documents are the property of the US Government, not Donald farking Trump, and he had no right to take any of them.

But republicans are playing calvinball, which means Trump has the power to magically declassify anything, but Biden is powerless to reclassify it. Just you watch.

F*ck republicans. They aren't Americans. They are traitors. I don't give a flying f*ck what they think. They only speak and write lies. I don't bothering reading or listening to them. Maybe 40 years ago, but now they have all shown themselves to be trump loving/putin worshiping filth.

When a republican writes or talks, that is something to be skipped to get to the possibility of valid data. They do not have the capacity to ever present anything close to reality.

Also, this suggests that if trump had simply gone through the process of declassifying extremely critical, damaging, intensely secret information BEFORE taking it home, it would have been A-OK

republican "thought" at its best

The conservative subreddit has been shockingly calm and measured discussing this. A lot of them have been very decidedly not on Trump's side concerning this, just a scant few are fighting the impossible fight that yes, the President can telepathically and instantly declassify anything at any time.

I'm thinking my way into maybe declassifying the remainder of French Vanilla ice cream in the freezer. You're thinking I'm fat.  I'm thinking you might be right. Gonna vote for Trump even if he doesn't run for anything. Just going to think my vote for him.

They'll all still fully and enthusiastically, support him when he announces that he's running for 2024. Which, because he's crazier than a shiathouse rat, could be any day now.

I wish I could give TFG a heart attack the same way he declassifies documents.

Hope? That word is fo shizzle around here.

In the middle of that article on GOP senators admitting that he cannot just declassify things because he says so or thinks it, Google embedded an ad for Depends night time undergarments.

I don't know why, certainly not a product I need or use (no judgement), but it was definitely an appropriate ad placement in the context of the article

Nope on the hope. I see the Trump situation like buying a $10 lottery scratcher ticket. You have decent odds of wining something, but it's only going to be the equivalent of another ticket. Might as well have invested that money in Democrats-botching-a-sure-lead stonks.

Anything new and interesting happen regarding him abandoning his second kidnapping attempt because people were waiting for the plane to arrive?

No, there's no such thing as a Cerebro of Treason to mentally declassify everything.  Also, why would anyone WANT to?

Probably because a bunch of those highly classified docs include a lot of corrupt shenanigans done by GQP Senators past and present.

The whole "thinking declassification" makes absolutely no f*cking sense, it is completely legally incomprehensible which is why it can't possibly be true.

If something is declassified, that has a whole lot of legal implications such as opening things up to FOIA requests. If there is no paperwork specifying what documents have had their classification changed and to what level, nobody can properly fill FOIA requests or provide documents to people with the proper clearance levels. YES the president can change the classification of anything at will, but there MUST be a process for it so that the information can be disseminated and the documents properly marked. His assertion that there doesn't have to be a process is total nonsense, and would probably be illegal on the basis of things like FOIA violations.

Well then, I'll just hold my breath while I wait for the GOP to support actually DOING something about it.

Given how much my head is spinning trying to understand that toddler.

How do these, supposedly, educated statemen not only have to accept the drivel, but then they have to defend it and make semi-coherent agreements that their base would accept.
