I just want to confirm, you think the RoadRunner crafted elaborate traps and distractions for the Coyote because they could outpace the coyote in a flat heat?

The coyote was the one making elaborate plans, traps, etc in an effort to kill the roadrunner.
Roadrunner just ran around making noise.

The coyote drew the fake road on the cliff face so the roadrunner would smash into it.

Coyote painted that fake tunnel on that rock, and Roadrunner magically ran through that as though it were an actual tunnel.  Coyote was confused, and tried to run through it too.  He instead smashed into the rock.

when i was in High School, we'd go to our local space theatre where they would put on Laser shows.
one of the animations was the coyote catching the road runner, everyone erupted in applause.

also, i've driven by the park in TFA a few times. the area is beautiful as are the Superstition Mountains.
Just down the road from the entry to the park is the Goldfield Ghost Town which is a hoot.
stay the heck a way in the summer months.

Roadrunners are neat.  I see them on my property from time to time.  They eat snakes (and I think the venomous ones as well), so they're good in my book.

I don't have photos or videos on this phone apparently, but I've had roadrunners come up to me looking for food. They're pretty smart animals (carnivorous!) And quickly learn not to fear humans if they're fed.

Please don't feed wild animals.

That coyote is really a crazy clown.
When will he learn that he never can mow him down?

I used to see them flicking back and forth when I rode my bike in the back country. It's the same logic as jungle fowl, all the good bugs are at ground level, all the hawks are above the trees, let's run like mad in the woods and look for bugs and not being eaten by hawks.

My dog channels her inner coyote whenever she sees a roadrunner.  If I didn't have her on a leash, she'd be off.

I live 20 miles south of the Superstitions with plenty of desert wildlife in the neighborhood. Roadrunners are almost as common as the pigeons. Coyotes every so often, lots of quail, chipmunks, rabbit, hawks, and one time I saw 3 buzzards/vultures tearing something apart at the playground at the end of the street.

Many years ago I was seeing the sights in the Texas Hill Country with a GF. Many homes had roadrunner likenesses on their front outer house walls, porches, mailboxes, etc. Obviously a thing around here, whatever.  Well as I drive through a neighborhood, I was pretty surprised to see a real bird cruising along next to our car, maybe 6 feet off the road, moving fast and racing me!  Suddenly it all made sense; only time I've seen one.

But if a coyote's at risk of catching a roadrunner, wouldn't a roadrunner just fly away?

They are not flightless birds, are they?

They lack a keel so they can fly like chickens maybe. They don't call them Road Flyers.

I dunno, it was a bit on QI I saw that mentioned that they can fly, and while I don't trust either QI or Wikipedia to be 100% accurate, Wiki says:

Roadrunners and other members of the cuckoo family have zygodactyl feet. The roadrunner can run at speeds of up to 32 km/h (20 mph)[9] and generally prefer sprinting to flying, though it will fly to escape predators.[10] During flight, the short, rounded wings reveal a white crescent in the primary feathers.

And just because a bird is known as a roadrunner doesn't mean they lack the capacity of flight.
