A new Russian submarine is just an old Russian destroyer.

Oh Andrei, Andrei Andrei...

2022-09-22 2:41:07 PM
Yeah, that doesn't exactly feed into the narrative that things are going great for Putin. Someone expects Crimea to fall.

Even better? Xi is watching this happen.

2022-09-22 2:42:37 PM
Rather than former submarines wouldn't they become permanent submarines?

2022-09-22 2:44:45 PM
He could want them out of the blast zone.

Subs are a lot easier to hide from the retaliation. His best surface ship is now an artificial reef so fark 'em.

Counterpoint: when you sink a submarine it's still a submarine.

Some of those boats are 43 years old.

They are probably more Flex Seal than bulkhead at this point.

Putin could have kept his naval base in Sevastopol just by paying Ukraine money and/or trading fossil fuel resources, but he's too greedy for that. Now after this conflict ends, it may be almost inevitable that Sevastopol will become a NATO military base.

That's what I'm wondering.

Not from Ukraine, but some US purchased Surface to Surface cruise missiles could target ships docked in port with high explosives.

From Russia. Given their weapons quality, you'd want anything valuable FAR away from the intended target.

Maybe borrowing a page from Yuri Kellerne's book, and leaving nuclear land mines vaporization bombs around like at Odesa.

I am more afraid he's moving them out of the blast radius.

Farkers aren't saying Russian nukes aren't a thing, we are stating that they are so unreliable (based on how much Russia corruption has screwed over its own soldiers fighting in Ukraine) that many of the missiles themselves might not get off the ground (though you only need a few successful launches in order to destroy the world, since NATO retaliation would end Russia). However, they could just arm a tactical nuke on a timer and set it to blow the base up without needing a missile.

Russia's demographic crisis can't  be solved without taking over other countries to add to the population:
https://jamestown.org/program/russias-demographic-collapse-is-accelerating/

This France24 report is even more damning because it says Putin equates population with power:

It's possible that Russia just doesn't want them to be blockaded in. Ukraine doesn't really have a navy but they could probably seal off the base, especially if they have some new long range missiles.

Hydrophones, underwater microphones, my grandfather on my mother's side had a hand in developing them while working for Bell Labs.

No YMS-15s or MS-09s to distribute either.  No patrons like Kycillia either.  He's got a bunch of fancy looted artwork that's doing him fark all.

In 2 or 3 years, Sevastopol will be at minimum an EU-aligned sub base, possibly a NATO base. And one specifically designed to survive extremely heavy bombardment, at that.

Incredibly strategically important, and Vlad the Incompetent pissed it all away because he had a micro-hard-on for the good ol' Russian empire.

You wouldn't need to worry about a submarine if you're using a tactical nuke. The blast area isn't that large, and you'd tell them to go deep anyway, just to make extra sure. I think it's more likely they fear the reach of Ukrainian weapons and saboteurs may be increasing and want to protect their assets, particularly when they're in port.

The United States said that if he attacked with a nuke they would destroy the black sea fleet, Hiding the black sea fleet hopefully is an indicative of them using a nuke

It doesn't make a lot of sense to take over those countries at the cost of slaughtering so many of your young men in the prime child-fathering age range. Seems like a net negative.

Not when you're getting high off of your own supply.  Putin stupidly thought he actually could have won the war, and quickly too.

I'm not so sure this qualifies as hiding the Black Sea Fleet as much as it is "conveniently organizing the Black Sea Fleet into one, easily strikable spot".  Practically, anyways.

/Eh, what do I know

You ever see fish in a lake float up dead when somebody chucks a stick of dynamite in the water? A nuke will disintegrate your internal organs from the shockwave, even if you're underwater in a sub.

Submarines aren't just nukes, they have torpedoes and are pretty much untouchable with surface weapons.

Russia hasn't maintained the warheads either. Most would be fizzles or dirty bombs.

Not great, not terrible.

They could all hide in the lead-lined fridge. I saw a documentary once. They would survive the blast, the radiation, and being blown several miles through the air.
