I don't want to survive a nuclear war, that sounds like unrelenting awfulness.

I'll head to ground zero, tyvm.

So much this. I'm unhappy when the store is out of my favorite cereal. No way in hell am I enduring a feral existence.

All is fine in Brixworth. Sure, four bombs went off in all directions, but the circles do not reach you in safe haven Brixworth.
£268,932 and you're all sorted

Not so good for fans of Islay malts, though. Faslane isn't too far away and as the UK's submarine base it will get a lot of attention in the Russian opening salvo.

That's a strange map. What's special about Roxburgh?

FTFA: "Those living in Leeds may want to consider a move as according to the map the Midlands city is a keen nuclear target."

And:
"Instead, it appears the North West of England and Lake District areas are the most nuclear-free options..."

Stopped reading right there!

/Leeds is not in the Midlands
//The Lake District has the largest Nuclear waste storage and reprocessing site in Europe, are they saying that's not a potential target?
/// Three, for the number of eyes I will have after the radiation hits!

After watching Season Six of the Shetland show, I'd be more afraid to be murdered, a murderer, or live with a murderer than to catch any radiation.

Faroe has ponies, too.

Just asking, why would Putin not nuke a nuclear submarine base.  I'm think this salesman doesn't really in tune with the art of war.  A real survivalist would build a shelter inside an Amazon warehouse, or a Tesco or Sainsbury's food warehouse.  If the blast doesn't kill you, you need food to survive, or liquor to barter.

FTFY.  I've been to Leeds.

Last year I'd have been on board with you.  At this point though, I'm thinking a nuclear war would be a bunch of Russian ICBMs blowing up in their silos, not nuclear, just the rockets blowing up, 1 or 2 NATO cities being hit with fission bombs that were supposed to trigger the fusion part of the bomb and Russia being wiped off the map.

They can't even keep their tanks and trucks gassed in Ukraine.  A minor power on their own border.  Do you realize how much effort it takes to keep an ICBM serviceable?

Safest is relative. Survivable is a whole other category, with corresponding sub-categories of immediate / short to medium & long term.

Fallout contamination is subject to the vagaries of the wind and it will end up in our reservoirs & other sources of drinking water as well as effectively in the air we breth & everything we touch. Yes, it will become less dangerous over time but our national infrastructure and supply chains would, on a continuum, rapidly become destroyed > inoperable > degraded > overstretched.

For multiple generations now this island cannot even feed itself without importing food from abroad. There's no way in hell a contemporary standard of living could be maintained & this assumes only the UK is hiat by even a 'limited' strike.

TLDR: Threads was right.

Hey - hey! Bristol (my town of birth) is ground zero!
The father told me that the UK didn't expect Bristol to be bombed by zee Germans in WWII.
They were wrong - Bristol got blowed up real good.

It's almost cute to see how naive the article is regarding the number of warhead detonations. "Only" 2 dozen or so.

The reality would be so much worse. Think at least 3 to 5 times more warheads, if not more. It would be an unparalleled bloodbath.

That said, Putin won't push the button. The UK alone has enough warheads to turn all Russian cities to ash. That's not even counting France, which has even more at nearly 250-300. Or the NATO members with a few hundred tactical nukes scattered all over Europe. Or the US.

Russia, like everyone else, cannot win a nuclear war, and Putin knows it. He may not act like he knows it, but somewhere in his reptilian hindbrain a bunch of neurons are constantly screaming "survive, survive, survive" and cannot be drowned out by rhetoric.

I am concerned, but I'm not losing sleep over it or planning a doomsday bunker.
