I'm glad Iranian people have no agency.  America is so powerful, Iran had no choice but to turn into a religious dictatorship.  America made them do it!

We should respect other cultures and not impose our modern western sensibilities. I mean, this is really our fault anyways. Don't you know how our evil is so evil that it forces others to act like this? So let's make this whole thing about our mistakes, we sure have some growing up to do, right? Besides, wouldn't you rather talk about yourself and your concerns?

About that...

Iran has quite a lot of people who participate in pre-Abrahamic religions but have to pretend to be Muslim because of stuff like this. The theocracy is not universally accepted. The culture there goes back thousands of years before Judaism and people remember.

The same CIA that couldn't find Bin Laden for a decade? Or thought that the Afghan forces could hold itself for months after our pullout resulting in the President making a decision that had US forces still in Afghanistan when they retook power?

This ain't the 50s. The CIA isn't this uber-powerful agency that they once were.

They're incompetent,

It's about people in glass houses throwing stones. The cartoon goes on to educate young little Christian White about how Islam borrowed heavily from pre-existing pantheons, the motive being to discredit Islam as a valid religion.

This is all done without a hint of irony, or acknowledgement of how Christianity did the exact same thing as it spread.

Some did. There was significant opposition in the aftermath of the revolution. Much of it was brutally suppressed.

Werewthey protesting for their women, or were they just protesting just because, though?

That's not me poo-pooing those protests. But it does seem like they were protesting not specifically because women were being oppressed, but because all Iranians were. Which is fine, of course, but that's different from protesting something that doesn't directly affect you.

2022-09-22 10:13:07 PM
That all came out weird, so let me clarify:  I'm saying that these protests are not the same as American men protesting women not being allowed to wear bikinis, because the equivalent incident in Iran happened in 1979, not now. I don't know what the equivalent today would be. Maybe something like the police beating a woman to death for wearing trousers or something. But we also have no real reference for such a thing in this country any more, because women don't really have their clothing policed by the state here whatsoever. But I would hope that American men would show up for those protests, too, if they were ever necessary. But you never know.

In 1979 there was a whole array of reasons for people who had fought for revolution to be unhappy with how things developed. But the protest that particular photo is from was specifically about women's rights (and in particular was prompted by dress code announcements). It was mainly a women's protest (emerging from Women's Day rallies), but as you can see the participation of male allies was important. I'd venture to say those particular guys were there to support women specifically.
