Protip: Don't illustrate an article about the "simpler life" with a pic that's been oversaturated until it literally hurts to look at.

This would be an ideal job for me if I didn't hate the farking cold so much

And what else?  Iceland is so freaking expensive (was there just last month) - even a fish and chips from a food truck costs US$20 or more.   You'd end up homeless at $50K.

No thanks.

I intend to visit someday, Iceland's awesome and all, but I like my life here with my family and my job that pays more than $50k in a province where everyone speaks English and there's always bland food available for my English palate.

Well i have no idea what to even put into the "writing skills" bit, so i fail right there. I assume they mean some sort of background education in writing or debate or whatever, of which i have none.

Earthworm Jim Jones: Can I bring my wife and kid?

Fun fact!  The population of Iceland is one of the most interrelated (not "inbred") populations in the world, to the point where you need to do a thorough DNA test to make sure you're not unknowingly marrying your 3rd cousin.

What I'm saying is that a foreigner could pull a lot of tail while they're there.

Too bad it's nothing but a sheet of ice. That's why I'm moving to Greenland instead!

Ditto.  I just paid a credit card bill with a couple of $100+ gas bills on it from our rental car.  Regular unleaded is almost exactly $10/gallon.

And for dedicated Farkers, it's even worse- don't even begin to look up what beer costs

Corporate Social Media Shill sounds completely antithetical to any notion of "simple life" that I can envision.

2022-09-21 3:29:05 PM
The job requires you to capture content for siggi's social channels and document the mission of simplicity while also experiencing all that Iceland has to offer, including the Northern Lights and Icelandic food.

It could be that I'm old and lazy, but that actually sounds like a lot of work for 55K.

This would be ideal when I was younger. But having an SO and kid (and house) puts a damper on that, plus household income that makes $50k untenable.

Woulda killed for such an experience when younger though.

Oh what the hell, gonna shove some BS into it basically saying "I've never owned a camera better than a cell-phone one, even though i was interested in wildlife photography years ago, and i don't have any writing quailifications whatsoever, i'm just doing this as an absolute longshot that realistically has no chance of succeeding".

It's not like it can get any worse than my life currently.

I was stationed in Iceland from April 1992-October 1993. To get into a club it was $20. A beer cost $8, a mixed drink started at $12. Levi's 501s were $135.
A Pizza Hut opened the week before I left so a bunch of us went to Reykjavik to get some. It was $54 for a large peperoni pizza.
It was soooooo expensive back then, I can't imagine that it got cheaper over the years.
It is an absolutely beautiful country though, full of beautiful people. People who love to party!!!

My thought exactly.

I wouldn't mind living in Reykjavik, but not for 50K USD. You'd be poor.

Maybe you'd be allowed to have a "side hustle", love that term, allowing you to survive?

Iceland is great.  Iceland Air will make you want to swim there, though.  That airline is like the evil child of Southwest and Ryan Air.

Been told a foreigner has to be pretty ugly and have a truly horrible personality not to get romantic attention. It's your HMC profile calling out to theirs saying "check out my variability. We can make beautiful antibodies together. And our kids won't spend most of their time measuring the space between their sixth and seventh toes!"

Yup. Buddy of mine moved there & hooo-boy! Smokes are like $15/pk, the cheapest vodak is $14/pint, EVERY piece of incoming mail gets opened & inspected, you have to pay 30% import tax for everything purchased online (like stuff from Amazon. Even down to friggin pens & Post-It notes).

Jobs fluctuate wildly from "We need another 5k workers!" to "We have 3k too many people!" between fishing/crabbing seasons.

I liked iceland.  I think I could live there for a couple years, but would get bored after a bit.

Reykjavik is a happening town with an insane music scene.    Some nice hiking and winter sports to keep me busy.  My not-icelandic accent was catnip to local ladies too.

But it is a small island and very expensive.  Eventually you would run out of things to do and see.

Sounds just like here, i'd fit right in. I don't partake in online shopping beyond Steam games at all precisely because of it.

thy crotch: $50,000!!  That's like 9 beers there.

Lulz....I came here to make a comment about the drink prices.

The only experience I've had in Iceland was an hour layover in 2017.  Although I will say that Keflavik International is a really good airport....an hour was plenty of time to make my next flight.

/Although I only had enough time to pound one beer in the lounge.

But since they hate Danes even more than anyone else...

Once you arrive you'll be led to a compound and not allowed to leave. You'll be given a computer and expected to produce positive content while running a Ponzi scheme. You'll be allowed to leave once you work off your 150k debt. 50k has already been paid by your sign on bonus!
Unless we decide to sell you to one of the mostly Muslim countries that practice slavery. Burma, Cambodia and some others.

kkinnison: $50k job in Iceland? Probably interfere with my other job so I won't starve or die of exposure

I'm texting my buddy there right now about this article. His response: "What farking 4 day workweek? My next day off isn't for 11 more days & pulling 96 hours this week alone".

TFA is probably referring to like 100 $500k/yr employees at three companies who get to work that lenient of a schedule.
