We're going to show them! We're going to make the US the first Fourth World country! USA! USA! USA!

FYI: the UN already classified the US as a third world country, homelessness on income inequality and healthcare back in 2017

It's about time we started admitting that no, the US is not a first world nation and if not for its military, has no business leading the world in anything

Now this...this is some actual American Exceptionalism!

I'm sure someone will be here to ask silly questions. Like, if America is so bad why does everyone travel here for medical care.

And they would be right. If you have money, America does indeed offer the best medical care and treatment and facilities in the world.

If you have money. Lots of money.

Well, a significant chunk of the country has closed themselves off and decided to oppose anything that may help someone else. Do that for long enough and you'll become a shiathole country too.

It's the farking puritan ethic infecting everything. Poverty, sickness, mental health, and addiction are seen as personal, moral failings instead of societal issues. From the right, this manifests as abject, naked hatred, from the left it manifests as means testing everything up the ass and out the mouth. We're so terrified that someone "undeserving" might see a single shred of benefit meant for someone more "worthy" that we'll waste more money than could ever possibly be recovered, in the name of rooting out cheats.

Who'da thunk that the country that has gone all in on wage slavery and locking the poors out of the basics of society unless they add value to the stock portfolios of their betters is a third-world country.

This place f*cking sucks. You can't even get the government to agree that food and water are human rights, let alone getting them to agree that nobody should be too poor to live.

The phrase "developing" smuggles in a whole lot of assumptions about the inevitable arc of "progress" or "freedom" or whatever that are aspirational at best and willfully blind at worst.

I don't know the exact numbers off hand...  But this country is SO far behind in SO many things, that it's ridiculous for us to keep touting the phrase that we are "The greatest country the world has ever seen."

We rank the lowest in things like math and science (education in general), healthcare, social safety nets, etc...
We rank the highest in things like incarceration, homelessness, suicides, gun violence. wealth gap, government corruption, etc...

These are all things that could be fixed of course.  But the Republicans especially have NO interest in fixing any of it.  And the Democrats are always too busy playing both sides to really have any effect.  And they can't do anything without the help of the Republicans.

Hell, much of this country wants to close the borders and go it alone.  No globalization at all.  Of course those people have no idea how much we rely on imports AND exports to make ends meet.  But I already mentioned that this country is willfully stupid and ignorant.

Meh...  Whatever, you guys already know all this.  I'm just ranting at this point.

"a devotion to "American exceptionalism" keeps the country from candid appraisals and course corrections."

The 1st, 2nd and Senate must go. They were major mistakes by the founding fathers.

NoahFenze: Republicans.. setting us back 10-50 years, one election at a time.

With the level of gerrymandering, voter suppression, outright disenfranchisement, voter roll purges, ballot "challenges", nakedly discriminatory voter ID laws, lack of enforcement of the freedom to vote, election day not being a day off for bloody anybody, lack of no-excuse vote-by-mail access in many places, and continued post office farkery, you need to start putting "election" in quotes.

If elections were fair, we'd have had almost zero Republican presidents since Bush, and they wouldn't have a lock on over half the legislatures & governorships in the country.  And Congress wouldn't be perpetually deadlocked when it isn't stomping the "fascism" pedal all the way to the floor.

Y'all really need to stop reflexively blaming only Republicans for things that both parties have actively contributed to over the decades.

Majority Democrats in California voted against universal healthcare.

Biden proudly (?!) said he'd veto universal healthcare legislation if it landed on his desk.

Biden also famously laughed at my generation being shackled by predatory student debt.

The Democrats in Congress voted down an increase to the minimum wage.

NOBODY in government, save for a certain white-haired socialist from Vermont and a certain young Latina ex-bartender from New York, actually gives a damn about the working class in this country.

"Developing" is probably a misnomer. The shiathole countries are in fact fully developed, and their designated role is to be economic exploitation zones.

So much this.

We are, right now, the only civilized country in the world without universal healthcare.  And the reasons for it are bonkers.

The bottom line - the main and final reason - is that the government benefits from the system as it is.  Our politicians are bought and paid for by that industry.

But the reason that they keep selling the country is that "taxing everyone for the bad behavior of fat slobs, drug addicts, and smoking alcoholics" is something we can't tolerate.

Never mind that that is NOT the reason things are so bad.  Also, we already DO pay for all of that.  A LOT.

When you tally up what you pay for insurance, and then add to that the amount you get charged every time you go to any doctor for anything other than a physical, you are paying WAY more than you should EVER have to.  And the reason that those costs are so high is because of the number of people that are unhealthy, cannot work, are not insured, cannot get the help they need, but end up sick and can't pay their bill.
So WE ARE paying for all of that anyway.

Not to mention that if all of those people were able to go to the doctor, and get the help that they need, they would be healthy and able to work.  They would then be able to pay into the system.

As it is, people can't afford to go to the doctor, even when they have insurance, making them even MORE unhealthy, which costs even more.

If we paid a little bit more in taxes, it would cost us FAR less as a society, and even so as an individual, if you have a lot of medical issues.

But no...  Let the government, Rep and Dem alike, keep telling you that the entire rest of civilization is wrong about this, and OUR healthcare system is the best way.  Right.  Ok.
