I still haven't seen the first of those movies.. but after Matt Ryan, I'd have a hard time seeing anyone else in the role.

My wife watched that show and the entire time I kept thinking it was Bill Pullman from Ruthless People

I enjoyed the original movie, it's not the best movie in the world but still OK.  A lot didn't though, but as I didn't know it was a comic-book I had no preconceived notions as to what to expect and that could be why I had no issues with it.

Plus It has Rachel Weisz who is always a pleasure to watch and Tilda Swinton was awesome as usual and makes the most of what she has to work with.

the movie itself is fine for a genre film. It is pretty good actual. Just don't try to link it to the greater DC comics world. Let is be its own thing, with more style than substance. Had get the same person who hired, Weisz, Swinton and Lucifer. It was inspired casting.

I knew OF Constantine, but was unfamiliar with the comics going in to the film.  Yeah, it strips a lot away from the source (unnecessarily, in the case of some deleted scenes), but as its own thing, I thought that it was a good film.  Great casting (except Gavin Rossdale), I loved the look, and even if I had been a fan of Constantine before, I'd have been fine with the plot.

I didn't know until just now that the film had a post-credits scene.  I always just shut it off after the credits started.

I like Keanu. He's awesome. But that version of Constantine was so not Constantine. I really wish they'd just Hollywoodized it a little more, changed his name to "Jake Hellblazer" and made a new thing. It was a decent movie when you take it out of the John Constantine context.

As stated earlier, the definitive version of John Constantine on the screen is Matt Ryan, and I do not understand why WB is so damned stupid as to not put him in a feature film. The fans love him. He gets the character. Just back a truck full of money up to Garth Ennis' house, ask for a script, and cast Matt Ryan in the lead.

Boom. Best Constantine movie ever, provided they get a director who can do magick in film without it looking silly.

The Keanu movie was a very solid piece of film.  It hit the marks for Constantine in almost every way, and was way more entertaining than it had any right to be.  Sure, they altered the character massively, but what they built around him was so spot-on for the world, it just worked.

And Keanu's John was a great character, just very different than the one we knew.  But since it was executed so well, I still loved it.  Oddly, the first Jack Reacher movie was the same way.  Great move, great character, well done.  Just not the character we knew from the previous material (we'll ignore the sequel on that one.  It was thoroughly forgettable and mediocre).

And I've been a fan of the Hellblazer comic for a long, long time.  Re-read the collected editions of the early years fairly regularly.  I'd happily see more Keanu Constantine.

Yeah, I like Keanu and Constantine was an okay movie, but it was definitely a different take on the character. I have no problem with a sequel though and now that Keanu is more of a grizzly older guy, it might make the character more interesting.

Because the only Matt Ryan crowds know is an NFL quarterback

I don't particularly recollect the movie. I know I saw it. I didn't know much about Constantine, so I benefited from being a blank slate, and I don't remember being impressed or disappointed with the movie. It was one of those "okay, I saw that, wasn't a waste of my time but not going to watch it again" movies.

"Dey-hav-duh-spear-of-deh-sti-nee!" He was great. One of the best Satans I've seen on screen.

Constantine remains one of those objectively bad movies that I can watch again and again. The visuals and the characters were great, even if the plot relied on too many Ancient Thingies What Do Really Specific Things to keep moving. And everyone but Keanu farking GNAWED the scenery, from Oscar winners to...well, Gavin Rossdale.

"YOU DAAARE?! IN MY HOUUUUUWSE!!!"

We've endured so many so much worse DC movies since then.  We didn't know how good we had it.

The internet opinion on just about any genre movie at release is "it set fire to my golden childhood, and you're a filthy, shiat-eating peasant if you got a single moment of joy from it".  It's generally the same today.

he's fine though the standout is Tilda Swinton as Gabriel.  No surprise there.

Tilda as Gabriel was great. I also thoroughly enjoyed Peter Stormare as Lucy.

Speaking of Lucy, I think my least favorite live action depiction of Lucifer to date is Gwendoline Christie... I wanted to like her but she's devoid of charm or menace.

I'll still watch it. The Sting look never was the important part of the character to me. My biggest takeaway from the movie was my wife squeeing over Gavin Rossdale again. Felt like it was 1997 all over again.

Still haven't seen the Keanu film yet, and I've loved the character since the Dangerous Habits arc that the film was based on.

Sound like it's sort of the film equivalent of the Ship of Theseus problem: how much can you replace of the original character while still having it be the same character?

I have zero idea who Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù is. Never heard of the guy.

Matt Ryan isn't just the live action Constantine, he's also been the only voice of the animated version. And he has been the producer of the last couple animated Constantine flicks.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed Keanu as AmeriConstantine in the first one. The casting was terrific all around. The story is the only thing that kept it from being one of the real greats. But Keanu loved the movie and role so much that he's always wanted to do another movie, with a better story. Even as recently as December, on Colbert, he's talked about his inability to get a hard-R sequel made.

If we look at Ryan as Earth-1 Constantine, and Reeves as Earth-2 Constantine, there is no reason at all not to enjoy both performances.

I really liked Constantine just as a movie divorced from the comics, and can't stand just about anything Legends so don't care that matt ryan isn't in this.

Peter Stormare has to be Satan again though.

Secretary: "Yes, Mr. Groaning."

Matt Groening: "It's GRAIN-ing!"

Secretary: "Are you sure?"

Matt Groening: (sadly) "No..."
