I got my bivalent 9 days ago, so I'm good.
I'm still gonna wear my N95 in places with a lot of people indoors.

Hospitalizations continue to go down in my area, so that's good. We'll see if it holds by Nov-Dec.

Everyone who knows that is going to get it. The rest won't just because Biden suggested it.

I think Fauci also said it's no longer a pandemic... because now COVID is endemic.

Thanks, all you idiots who love your country so very f**king much that you won't do the bare minimum to look out for the others who share it with you.

Of all the people on here -- and that's saying something, considering how many of us there are -- you are the one I've come to count on to get it, because you've lived it, even more than I have (28 months in, and while Mrs. Heb was afraid in the early going that I might die, I haven't so far come as close as you have).

Beyond those who didn't make it, there are tens of millions of us long-haulers in the US alone who got sick, didn't get better, and have largely been left to fend for ourselves.

You're right; we need help, and we have for going on three years now. Thanks for saying what needs to be said, and feel free to PM me if you'd ever like to talk.

"Across the United States, about 400 people are dying every day from Covid-19"

400*365=146,000 annual deaths.

So still triple the annual flu deaths (pre-covid) and basically third behind cancer and heart disease.

[This is fine. jpg]

It's a little worse than that, because what I've read indicates that those who are infected now deserve all the suffering possible.  I guess the hate faction on the internet is outweighed by realities and reasonable people, but it is hard to talk about sometimes.

Here, some people have never stopped masking.  Many more are masking up again.  It will be a statement even if I'm not trying to make it, most of those who mask up now are either those most vulnerable or those well aware of the risk and danger.

I'm not sure why I've been without.  It was actually nice not to show my face for so long.

How many still die daily?

Now that it is "over"

I need a baseline in what a pandemic is not.

So today, in America, n people dying from a disease is not a pandemic

It's a whole 9/11 worth of people every week. No idea what that is in Rhode Islands - My converter only translates numbers to metric loss of life. The relevant conversion to Japanese money is 'One rush-hour subway carriage' worth of people. In Scotland it's measured as 1/3 of annual buckfast-related-crimes. (approx) Here in Sweden it's around 250 annual MVC's worth of dead folk (Moose-Vehicle Crashes).

/all figures googled by myself.

A growing phenomenon is that older people enter the hospital in a health crisis when negative for covid but catch it as a hospital acquired infection. Whether covid delivers the coup de grâce, or is just a sequalae to what happens as someone is dying is largely unknowable but at the end of life people's immune system can largely shut down making them much more vulnerable but this can be happening as various organs start to fail.

The pandemic in the sense of waves of infection is over, however, new variants that are significantly better at immune avoidance can quickly change that. Covid does remain an infectious threat, and will continue to remain as a threat globally unless we come up with a greatly improved vaccine. There is work on that front but the answer simply isn't obvious, it isn't simply a matter of working harder to spending more money. It's going to required a eureka moment.

The reality is that people have, mostly, returned to "normal" and dropped their guard. Having done that, we have not had a huge resurgence. Maybe if somehow, magically, we could get everyone to be on best behavior for 4 weeks we could drive the levels of infection down lower but we wouldn't be able to wipe covid out completely. And after the 4 magic weeks, it would climb back to the current background level. That's how a highly contagious infectious disease works.  That's the science. I know some just want to be outraged, but you're not listening to the science.

It is annoying. Students are starting to just come to classes knowing they are covid positive. There is really no policy preventing them other that "CDC requires an isolation period."

but who is going to enforce that?

Note, not all students. Some tell their teacher to work out arrangements, others just cough the whole time in class. Which is rude to other students, covid or allergies.

C'mon Joe, be better than that. Think of who you're addressing, play it to their level.

"Pandemic is over" might be technically correct based on strict definitions, yes, but that's not what people understand when they hear it.

Instead, try:
"Pandemic is moving to a new stage, and if we come together we can end it. The newest vaccine is key - get boosted (or just get it, if you hadn't gotten a previous version)."

I imagine Fox News will suddenly become very concerned about COVID, now that Biden has said it's over.

Tonight on Tucker "Why is President Biden ignoring a disease that is killing hundreds per day?"

Was another gaffe, second one in the "60 Minutes" interview.
Other one was him saying US would defend Taiwan.
White House immediately came out and said "Uhhhhh no he didn't mean that"

And to the people saying "The pandemic is over, now it's endemic. No.
