But it was a white F-150. Such a unique vehicle means it was obviously the stolen one. Why even bother to run the plates or VIN? Just arrest him. Why even bother with a trial?

Even if the cops needed to confirm the vehicle ownership NOBODY needed to end up in handcuffs while they ran a VIN number.

The couple should be punished, not the cops who assumed the couple knew wtf they were talking about. VIN plates are very easy to locate and read, there are at least 3 plates on every truck I've ever seen.

Filing a false police report, verbal or otherwise

Got a question: did the cops run the plate before detaining the man? If not, we have a serious problem.

NCSB-A fellow I knew was a cop in suburban Atlanta. He pulled over a fellow for rolling a stop sign and when he ran the plate it came back as stolen. So, he detains the fellow who was complaining loudly it wasn't. Later investigation after the guy got booked in was his ex-wife had reported it to mess with him. It was stuff like this that made my friend go into private security.

That was at night, and they had heard the "plop" of the newspapers the women were delivering and thought it was gunfire from the nut that had been gunning down cops in the past two days.  They were guarding a threatened officer's house and were already at panic-levels of alertness and that tipped them over into just blasting away. AFAIK, nobody got disciplined or canned for contagious firing at two women who miraculously survived.

Also AFAIK, nobody ever asked the obvious question of why they let the threatened cop stay at his known address where he'd have to be guarded by nervous cops instead of taking him to a safe house.

This is going to be difficult to explain away. It really only takes like 5 minutes to confirm that this truck belonged to the driver. CDL and proof of insurance, match it to the VIN, I mean, that's all they needed to do right? What's the non-racist excuse going to be?

Truck was at least 4 years old and used in landscaping.  The owners seriously couldn't identify if it was theirs or not?  By the time a car is 4 is has at  least a few door dings or bumper scrapes that they would recognize.

I would say somehow the couple has committed some crime, false report, slander maybe.

I sell truck accessories and you're absolutely correct. Landscapers beat the crap out of their trucks. If they took even like 2 minutes to look it over they should have known. It's not slander though, it's libel or defamation and it really only applies to broadcasting information. If they made some type of social media post about the incident with said accusations then yes, they could totally sue for libel.

The only shocking part is that they didn't immediately open fire into all nearby vehicles out of concern for their safety.

They didn't arrest him. The cops detained him, verified the vehicle was his and then went on their way. Which is exactly what most rational people would expect to happen.

With that said, cuffing him is not necessary for a detainment (you're detained when getting a speeding ticket, but rarely cuffed) and if he was cooperating, seems like a bit much.

I think we read different articles. The one I read never mentioned the age of anyone and only the race of the owner of the truck. Can you post a link to the one you read?

We might be approaching this from the wrong angle.  This guy was driving a truck.  Likely a fossil fuel powered truck.  An affront to mother gia.  We should be encouraging cops to harrass all truck drivers.  At least all ICE truck drivers.  And then after they are in cuffed have the police say "I wouldn't have had to detain you if you drove electric or took public transport.  Just something to think about".

We probably can't abolish to police.  Too many people love boot lickings.  But we can use them as agents for climate equity and have them harrass all coal rollers.  Plus it will give them the fix of authority they desire so maybe they won't just target black people for death every day.

Climate problem solved.

Clever, he steals a truck identical to one he already owns and has plates for and moves those plates and all of his work tools into the stolen truck and then sits around on the highway waiting to be seen.   Very clever.

FYI there were actually two entirely different truck shootings related to Dorner. Second time was a white guy, also in the wrong truck make, model, and color. He didn't get hit with a bullet but was injured by crashing. Again, the cops got away with it.

What should have happened: Idiot couple calls police. Police show up. Ask for vehicle registration and ID. Read it. Hand it back to him. "Okay, you're free to go." Turn to couple. "Every white truck ain't yours. Dumbasses." Then they leave.

Handcuffing him was wholly unnecessary and immediately shows they took the couple's side as soon as they arrived. I wonder why.

I'll bite. I said the cuffs were a bit much, if he was cooperating. So...

Every time you get a speeding ticket, they verify the license plate, not the VIN. Last time I checked, license plates are removable. The VIN, though viewable from the outside of the vehicle, is small and long. Takes some time to verify that.

I'm pretty sure what happened was:

Cops ask guy to step out of car so he doesn't take off while ownership can be verified from VIN. Cops overreact and cuff guy while doing this or guy doesn't cooperate necessitating the cuffs. Ownership verified. Guy sent on his way.

I really don't see the outrage. Sure, maybe the cops overreacted a bit with the cuffs, but does that warrant outrage?

CSB

Neighbor called me panicked that her kids were home alone and a crazy ex showed up. Asked me to check on them while she was speeding back. I did. Armed. And I called the police when I went over. Dude was gone when I got there, but the kids were terrified, so I hung around until the cops or the neighbor showed up. They both showed up at roughly the same time. Lady was telling the cops I was the neighbor and was just helping. Guess who got cuffed for about 30 minutes anyway while they sorted everything out? Me. They un cuffed me, returned my firearm, and thanked me while sending me on my way. Where is the outrage for me?
