Shares are/were closely held. The incorporating documents undoubtedly lay out how shares can be conveyed and likely prevent conversion. Shares are now held in trusts with protections from transfer and in the hands of nonprofits that have undoubtedly accepted those shares with terms preventing sale.

This is how you get  a camel through the  eye of the needle.

See how rare it is? See how difficult it is?

Next week or next month or next year when the economy tanks, this guy will have plenty of money, plenty of good will and the admiration of his community, and a real legacy he can be proud of. Everyone else will be praying to mammon and hoping they can run a scam big enough to keep their country club membership.

This guy just decided that enough was enough, and it was time to give it away and get on with life.

You'd have to do a history check as to whether he paid his employees above average wage or not. Were there any great perks and benefits? If not then no.

Also if no, you'll need higher standards subby.

Patagonia provides free on-site child care to its employees.  Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty good perk.

The trust isn't allowed to sell out, as I understand it. It's part of the reason there are such things
