Two separate issues:

1.  people won't pay as much to watch cheaters cheat as pretend their sportsball is pure.
2.  What are the side effects of these wonderdrugs and why are they banned from both sports and real life?

Baseball writers are the worst people on earth, aside from baseball owners and executives. These same cretins who pumped up Sosa and McGwire when they brought the fans back shortly after the '94-'95 fiasco, and gladly voted Barry MVP four years in a row, couldn't wait to turn on them when they "realized" these players were 'roiding.   Lemme make this simple, if you voted for Mac or Sosa or Barry for MVP any time between '99 and '04, and you didn't vote for them for the HoF, you lose your voting privileges forever.

Of all the major sports, baseball gets the least benefit of the doubt. We've read this bedtime story before. Home run chases get people's interest, and it coincidentally happens at a time when baseball desperately needs a public attention boost.

Baseball has been floundering a long time now plagued by bottom-feeder teams like Pittsburgh which frankly don't belong as an MLB club, the pace of the game, and a game utterly overrun by statistics that have made the game all about HRs, strikeouts and not much else.

I love baseball. It's perhaps my favorite sport. But I'm under absolutely no illusion that it's dying a slow death. If baseball turns a blind eye to Albert Pujols or Aaron Judge hitting the juice, as long as it gets some much needed eyeballs on the game, well...it's not the first time this happened.

As for the second question, the steroids that McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, etc were taking are far more refined that what you saw from 1970s football players or 1980s pro wrestlers. Game of Shadows, the book about Balco which was the lab that Bonds was getting the cream and the clear from, were engineered in a far more healthy fashion than the stuff that Lyle Alzado or Randy Savage were taking.

Put it this way. More time has elapsed from when McGwire, Sosa and Bonds were taking roids to present day than the time Alzado, Savage, etc took steroids to their deaths. If major side effects were to come along, it would have happened by now.

The reason is they are illegal is because of the performance-enhancing aspect, not from a health perspective.

Sad but true, Kellerman use to be one of the best boxing analysts in the world.  He literally started on New York public access and when they signed him to do Friday Night Fights it almost instantly doubled their ratings due to the levle of credibility he had witht he boxing community.

Now he is just another "hot take" guy in a sea of many that is ESPN.

Guess can't blame him since I am sure the $$$$ is better thab his public access amd early ESPN days.

Counterpoint: do you not think Judge is probably one of the most tested guys in the league right now, ESPECIALLY in a contract year and as the rest of the Yankees collapsed around him all through August?

Last year Pujolshiat 17 HRs in 275 ABs. This year it's 18 in 256 ABs. With a power surge like that he's clearly juicing this year.

Not at all. In fact, given MLB's track record, he's perhaps the least tested guys. It's in baseball's best interests to see Judge surpass Maris so baseball can be talked about in glowing terms.

If they find out something fishy, they'd have to suspend him and lose not just the publicity but all the advertisers aligned with Judge.

Pujols always had power from his rookie year, his plate discipline and plantar fasciitis simply got worse over the years. Honestly, the Cardinals were only able to sign him because of the universal DH rule - he would be pretty useless as a pure pinch hitter alone, now he can DH and play every other day and be the most useful to the Cards.

I'm not some gullible doe in the woods regarding PEDs/steroids in MLB and other sports - he very well could be or have been a user, but OTOH, it's not like he's having some Bonds/Clemens abnormal super year and he's not in peak physical shape either - he's got a slight beer gut and his HR trot is slow as molasses. It's just as reasonable to assume that he's having a solid year due to being reunited with his buddies in Molina and Wainwright and back in STL where he started, as opposed to being on the Angels where he was despised by management/ownership at the end.

Then I guess you never read Fark... because literally anytime any athlete from any sport does anything even remotely good, 90% of posts are how they're on steroids or drugs and couldn't do it naturally.

/It's what fat losers sitting in their mommy's basement say because they're too lazy to do anything themselves.  They just can't fathom that athletes (and some more than others) put in a TON of hard work.

Oh, they noticed alright. They didn't say anything about it while it was supercharging sales, but they noticed. Then, but only after Canseco published Juiced, the "messengers" erupted in feigned shock and disappointment over the horrible horrible cheating.
Fark those coaches, trainers, writers and the rest who actually get to see players up close every farking day but didn't 'notice' that the players were unaccountably beefing up like pro wrestlers. That's a crock of BS. There was money to be made and everyone turned a blind eye to the PED abuse.

that's an unusual take, considering everyone knew that Mac, Sosa and Barry were using substances ... sometimes before they were officially banned.    Everyone knew.   There is no "messenger" here.   The BBWAA voters who awarded the MVP to those guys knew all along.   It was only when Sen Mitchell and Hank Aaron got in Selig's face that anything got done.

In fact, Mac and Sosa were okay in everyone's books.   Barry was the catalyst since he was already so great, when he bulked up, he essentially broke baseball.   Only when that happened did anyone do a thing about it.   Remember, Mac, Sosa, and Barry are still eligible to play, coach and manage.   It's not a Pete Rose situation.   They are not banned from anything.    Barry was never suspended, simply blackballed.

"Blame the messenger".   You have got to be kidding, or under 25.

I'm just not seeing it.
Bear in mind, not only is this a contract year, he turned down $230M/7 before the season started. So not only would be be under the microscope, it'd be pretty silly of him to bet on himself by turning down a guaranteed payday only to jeopardize it all by taking PEDs.

....besides, it's not like this is unexpected performance. You may have noticed, but the guy is -huge- and he's always had this power. What's changed is he's a LOT more disciplined at the plate than he was in the past and he's refined his swing; neither of which PEDs help with. He's also managed to keep himself off the IL this year compared to prior seasons, so he's had a lot more PAs.

My broader point is that it's not in MLB's best interests to test either Judge or Pujols. Far better for everyone to watch baseball down the stretch with home run chases in play than to worry about what they are peeing in a cup.

MLB, in general, hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt on this subject given the fact that virtually every recent historic HR plateau has been marred in some way (A-Rod, Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, etc).

Factor in how little the Astros were punished, and you have an organization that has earned the reputation of shrugging off cheaters.

It might not be fair to Judge or Pujols, but when you look at where they are, and how  MLB has long had a habit of going blind at the absolute correct time, it's not out of line to question the results.
