Was it anthology horror? That seems to work best, as non anthology tends to go up its own ass on plausibility after a season or two.

Yep! Main difference was the intro/outro portions for the individual stories were animated and designed to look like the comic. Some were pretty corny but there was a lot of good.

You'll scream at ghastly ghouls;
Cringe at weird kids;
And shiver at the doings of evil doctors

Way ahead of you, Creepshow.

I was 5 in 1982 and the hand popping out of the ground for "my cake" scared the absolute hell out of me.

This one always stands out to me.
And I love Newman's speech at the end- "look around here, Michael. There are only murderers in this room"

Creepshow was not based on a comic book, rather it was an homage to the great horror comics of the 50s and 60s. But Creepshow did spawn a comic book (of the movie). A few sequels later, we got the excellent Shudder series (three seasons and two specials). Only THEN did we get a Creepshow standalone comic book. It was a special #0 released at SDCC that illustrated two unused stories for the TV show.
