Wait, I know nothing about guns, but a bouncing shell is what did him in? How is that even possible?
Or is the writer just clueless (and it was actually a clip)?

If it was a slug, I suppose it is possible.  Highly unlikely, but not a zero probability.

Or, perhaps his friends weren't really all his friends.

A slug shot from a shotgun instead of small shot maybe...Or they could be referring to the pellets (shot) coming back at him in ricochet also..Kinda vague wording..

Writer is most likely using the wrong term. I'll wager it was a slug or a 00 buck pellet that came back off the steel and struck him. It's a freak accident but can and does happen.

It does, I got hit with in the face with a pellet that ricocheted, luckily it was just bird shot, and barely broke the skin. But it does happen, and it's a damn good reason why you don't fire at steel plates with a shotgun. I was firing at an earthen berm, so it must've just bounced off a rock at just the right angle.

But I'd wager it was 00 buckshot, and if you were close enough, I could see it happening. Because obviously it did... I doubt it was even an accidental "O shiat we accidentally shot him, what do we tell the cops?" situation. Because it's hard to accidentally shoot someone with just one pellet of 00, they usually bring seven or eight friends along for the ride.

Agreed, firing shotgun rounds at steel is generally not a wise decision. For those unfamiliar with guns - a single 2 3/4" 12ga shell of 00 buck can hold 8 pellets that are about the diameter of a single 9mm round.  Any one of these pellets bouncing directly back at you at close range is a recipe for disaster.

It just occurred to me that I don't understand most physics, but I do understand most safety rules.

Grognard: If it was a slug, I suppose it is possible.  Highly unlikely, but not a zero probability.

Or, perhaps his friends weren't really all his friends.

A standard buckshot round holds 8 pellets, that are each .33 of an inch in diameter.  When fired from a shotgun, each of these pellets has a velocity of 1325 feet per second.  A .38 special fired from a revolver has a muzzle velocity of only 679-980 feet per second, and a .357 magnum has a velocity of 1,500 feet per second.  Each pellet of 00 buckshot has more killing power than a .32 revolver round or a .380 auto pistol round.  Some would argue that it is on par with a .38 special.

Shotguns are considered short range weapons because they are only accurate out to 50 to 52 rounds, but the lethal range of a shotgun pellet, when using 00 buck, which it sounds like they were using, is much further than that for anything down range, you just can't be sure if you will hit it or not.

Shotgun pellets can and will ricochet off of metal.  If they ricochet in a direction opposite of the one the direction they were traveling, they lose their lethal velocity pretty fast.  If however, they ricochet at an angle, which is far more common, they can be lethal at a considerable distance.

My guess was that he was either standing at very close range to a metal target, possibly an iron shooting target that is designed to spin when hit, or else was standing at a 90 degree angle from such a target, at what he wrongly thought was a safe distance, perhaps to get a cellphone shot of the metal target getting hit.  My personal thought was that they were probably shooting at metal objects to make a youtube video, because you will find numerous such videos on the internet, of young men shooting at old appliances and computer motherboards.

Guns are not toys, but once again we have a tragedy where a young man needlessly lost his life, because he and his buddies wrongly thought that guns are toys.  Hell, the military doesn't allow 18 year old soldiers to use firearms, either in training or even in military operations, without strict supervision from much older, and more mature NCOs, and those kids go through a hell of a lot of safety and accuracy training.  However, we have no problem letting teenage civilians run around and shoot guns unsupervised, because it is always what we have done, and every time a kid dies in an accident, we just shrug our shoulders, and figure it is just one of those tragic accidents that happen, that can't be prevented in anyway, like when an 18 year old dies in a car crash because he was driving in his high performance sports car.  I mean you can't tell me it is a stupid idea to trust kids with things that can kill them and others?

At a outdoor pistol range a girl shooting in the next stall over kept hitting the target holder. Eventually a bullet hit my head. Didn't even draw blood. But it hurt for hours.

A 12 gauge deer slug fired at close range against a thick steel plate could definitely ricochet straight back at the shooter. Sure, the lead slug would deform on impact, but if the steel plate is thick enough that the kinetic energy isn't absorbed by the process of denting the steel, then that kinetic energy is going to be invested in that 1 oz. lead slug in an equal and opposite reaction. A 1 oz. lead projectile doesn't even have to break the skin to kill you if it hits you in the right place. The Roman legion's Balearic auxiliary slingers used 2 oz. lead bullets for centuries.
qph.cf2.quoracdn.netView Full Size

And that's assuming they weren't screwing around with some sort of specialized 12 gauge slug made of metal harder than lead, therefore spending less kinetic energy deforming the slug, and resulting in more kinetic energy bouncing backwards.

Because of hunters lead poisoning all.the wildlife with shotgun pellets, manufacturers began making steel shot which could ricochet like hell. This might be what happened.

This is likely. Steel has a restitution-coefficient (percentage of speed retained after impact) of around .60-.80. Lead is around .07-.08. So a steel ball travelling at 1300fps impacting a steel target will still be travelling 910fps--still lethal. Lead will almost completely stop because all the energy is spent deforming the pellet at impact.

Betting on it was steel pellets or somesuch.  Steel bounces much better than lead.  But don't shoot either directly at a steel plate, or with anyone near the bounce angle.

Or, you know, maybe they just murdered him.

I've only ever fired at metal targets twice in my life... always in larger groups. EACH time, someone got hit with shrapnel to draw blood.

I have no intention of ever being near those f*cking things ever again.

I could see it happening.  Especially if you are using steel shot. I shot #7 birdshot at a chunk of hardwood, and a pellet bounced back and nailed me in the ribs. Didn't have enough mass to break the skin, but it did hurt pretty damn well.

Same thing happened to someone else I know who tried shooting a sheet of plexiglass off a tanning bed.

So a steel 00 buck ricocheting off a steel plate, and having enough mass and energy to pierce the body certainly seems plausible.

How close was he to the target? None of this really adds up. Shotguns are not known for their ricochets.

Yeah, but for 00 buck to maintain lethal velocity he would have had to been insanely close to the target.

Rounds cooking off in a fire aren't usually as dangerous as when fired from a gun. The gun contains and directs the force. Obviously though, dumb kid shouldn't have done that. Still not safe.

We're missing a key point... it's really easy to load your own shot shells, maybe he was doing some of that dumbshiat people do on youtube.
Anyway, I've never seen factory steel shot large as 00, steel shot is usually bird shot. That's why they banned lead shot for hunting in most places: waterfowl. I've seen #4 which is rabbits and such, but it's not as common. The steel they use is usually very soft (less wear on a gun barrel), but it will bounce of a hard target for sure. Bismuth shot is a bit better to use because it is more like lead, it's just $$.  If you're close, I guess could get hit with a #7 steel shot ricochet and bled out with an unlucky hit. I wouldn't shoot steel closer than 25ft even with lead pistol rounds on a range, 100 yards on a rifle.

Ok, so my brother knows a guy who runs some tanning salons. He also installed several music systems for the salon. The salon was getting a bunch of new beds, and he didn't want to deal with trying to offload the old beds, so he gave like 20 of them to my brother who decided he'd try and resell them (I think he had to kick back some of the cash).
Well a few were pretty much parts beds, so he took the plexiglass sheet you lay on and decided to see what happens if you shoot it.
Well it holds up really well to #7 birdshot was what he found out when he caught a bounce back to the chest. Hurt, but didn't break the skin. The plexiglass I think had a crack in it, but that was all the damage it took from #7. 00 buck on the other hand farked it right up.

/I hope knowing this story now has improved your life

My first time shooting a real gun, my pal had a .22 LR and we went plinking at a vacant area with lots of old abandoned vehicles. He shot at a car door on an old rusty car probably from the 50's and the bullet ricocheted right back and hit him in the thigh. He fell down and was hollering. It barely broke the skin but we were done for the day after that.
