Neil Gaiman wrote comics for Comic Relief (started by one L. Henry and others) thirty years ago, I also seem to recall Lenny helped get Neverwhere made.

Yeah, he's really going to listen to some Musksniffers' opinions about a black hobbit.

What a stupid reason to dislike a show. The color of the character's skin. "Well akshually there would not be African people in this totally plausible dwarfs living under a mountain scenario." Please fark off.

RoP is pretty good. Not 100% accurate to the original Tolkien time line, but still good.

Take HoD though. Bad writing. Bad direction. Bad acting because of the bad direction. It sucks. Not because there are non white people in this hypothetical world, but because of the reasons I give.

If I wasn't watching before, I would now.

I hope it becomes the most popular show in history and Elon's stans take up immasculating themselves in protest.

Yes, a useless gesture, i know.

I haven't seen the Rings of Power yet.. my father's been trying to get me to.  I wouldn't expect to see any Hobbits at the very start of the 2nd Age, but we never did know when Iluvatar made them.

Some asshole ranting at an author who has nothing to do with it seems like it fits the Angry Ignorance of the times.

Does he really think he wrote it, or is it just an easy way to get attention?

I really wanted to like the Rings of Power.

I tried to watch it three times,

I just couldn't bear it.

Since when is Gaiman working on RoP?

Or is that the joke?

Yeah.  I figured it out.  I don't do Twitter so sometimes the replies look like they're in the wrong order to me until my brain adjusts.

You nailed it. Bigotry and low intelligence go hand in hand. Gaiman wrote and produced The Sandman, who has also provoked little shrieks of angst due to some characters having darker skin. Pterry Pratchett had the right idea: '"Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because -- what with trolls and dwarfs and so on -- speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green." Captain Carrot is clearly a redheaded white guy in Pratchett's books, but if they cast Regé-Jean Page in the role, you wouldn't catch me crying.

Hobbits aren't mentioned until 1,000 years into the 3rd age.

Which doesn't mean they were suddenly created on the spot in that particular year. And for some reason were numerous. And were already belonging to 3 different ethnicities. And were migrants already.

This is one of those (common sense) blank spots in Tolkien's history of Arda that the writers of "Rings of Power" are using to write their own stories.

Tolkien didn't write anything about Harfoots migrating this early in his history... but, he didn't ever say when they DID start their migration or when they were first created either.

The show creators really HAVE to break the lore to make their show.

You cannot make a character driven narrative out of the events of the second age unless you are willing to rewrite the timeline that Tolkien created. Nothing has been broken yet, but I assume the timeline WILL be condensed in order to make a story out of it.

People keep claiming they broke lore already though.

So far... they have not. (Female dwarves should be more masculine perhaps, and elves should be impossible to tell their gender entirely, but besides that...)

Tell me what lore is broken, or what race and ethnicity the characters are not correct for. I will personally respond in this thread how you are wrong (within 24 hours). And I will provide citations.

A bunch of racists are providing people with bad takes on Tolkien's lore, and I fear people are believing it. This show is totally in bounds currently. If you have been listening to idiots, I will personally point you towards actual Tolkien material to fix your concerns.

I thought the scene where radagast fathers the ents owed far more to modern sensibilities than the source material.  Everyone knows lube wasn't even invented yet in the second age.

YOU have never read Tolkien and it shows.

Silly events that could never be true are commonplace in the bible... and the writings of Tolkien.

This was a good story event to include if the writers wanted people to think Tolkien himself might have come up with this. This is Tolkien copycatting at its absolute finest.

Even before this there were harassment campaigns against Middle Age historians who had the gall to not not just teach that Black people have existed in Europe for over a thousand years, but had the utter temerity of showing proof too!
The version of white history they've created in their heads is so wrapped up in their own identities that anything that challenges it, no matter how objectively trivial, is an attack against them as a person.

Some Musk fanboy asked Neil Gaiman what he thought of Elon Musk not liking Rings of Power.

A confused "what do I have to do with any of this?" Neil replied with something like, "I wouldn't take literary criticism from Musk anymore than he should ask me for advice on how to not buy Twitter."

Cue legions of howling crypto-bros with chapped assholes.

You know, the more they complain the more I'm gonna watch the series and enjoy it just to make them angry. I don't care if Galadriel does a trench run against Dol Guldur in an X-Wing. It's worth it for the right wing hysterical nonsense.

I also love that these idiots pine for the old days of the Jackson LOTR movies, which had no wokeness, even though exactly the same criticisms were made of the films then as are being made now. "They replaced Glorfindel with Arwen and allowed the character to speak out loud on screen! DOES THE DISGRACEFULNESS OF PC CULTURE KNOW NO BOUNDS?!?"

Can I still rail against the horribleness that was/is The Hobbit movies?

Tauriel is awful because there is no need for a love triangle sub-plot, it contributes nothing.  The big white orc is terrible because there is no reason for him either.  I could go on, but I'll restrain myself.

"Neil Gaiman thinks your RACIST if you don't like the BLACK hobbit!"

Sometimes, I sit and think about the gifts given to humanity.

The edges we have against other animals that let us arise from small chittering mammals to become the dominant species on the planet.

Our ability to sweat effectively that lets us run for extreme distances.

Our ability to throw thing accurately, thus giving one of the best long distance attacks in the animal kingdom.

And finally the large brains that let us contemplate complex thoughts, form intricate relationships, and generate a culture that is rivaled only be eusocial insects.

I sit and think about all of this, and then something like this comes along.

Where I think of this person, actively using these gifts given to him by 200,000 years of pressured evolution, to be a real piece a shiat. To actively regress his fellow man.

It's a spit in the face of every hunter/gatherer that ever tried a new berry and died from it, or every young ape that figured out how to run on two feet.
