It does have Arlington in the name of city for a team that doesn't actually play in the City named. If the Bears aren't looking for any public funding and are going to put over $9 billion in construction cost it looks like it could be good. There is room to build an entertainment zone that could be fun.

The Arlington Heights city council is about to block any public funding although Da Bears might get some tax incentives for certain business in the surrounding retail park.

My dad used to have season tickets when I was a kid - will miss going to Soldier Field but I think it is all but a done deal.

Also, subby, please warn me of any toupees that are that egregious in advance next time.

They said they aren't going to ask for public funding for "direct stadium structure construction." Which just means they'll probably try to bilk taxpayers for the rest of the complex instead.

I have heard there are a lot of shiat hole areas in the bowels of the stadium.
But that is to be expected for a stadium nearly 100 years old.

I'm not saying I am against a new stadium.
I just love those columns. In my opinion they iconic. Like the steel work inside Wrigley

So, they say they won't ask for public funding, meaning they will ask for public funding. Have any of these billionaire playgrounds EVER paid dividends when they've been moved? I believe the answer is no. It doesn't bring in nearly the $ promised and after a year or two the glitz and glamour are gone, and the envy of other newer playgrounds starts to happen.

If billionaire owners want these, make them pay the full cost themselves or through private funding. Taxpayers fund these things, then get a bump up in their yearly taxes to pay for everything including the rising cost of living but have zero rights to the stadium.

The coddling of the rich in this country needs to farking end.

What they should do for the entertainment part is just lease the plots of land and let the companies that want to come in build their own buildings.  No reason for tax payers to pay to build a casino. They can afford to build it themselves.

This is going to happen for a variety of reasons.  The Bears are an asset poor team.  The family that owns the team doesn't have any other businesses to fall back on.  They're not Kroeneke or Kraft.  They also don't own Soldier Field.  They rent it.

So the league is very keen to get them a stadium and get them sold to someone else.  Virginia is 99 years old and she has 10 children and 26 grandchildren.  They all want a piece.  When she dies it's going to make the Denver situation look simple.

Chicago would also be smart to just let the Bears go.  I get the history and the romance, but the Bears pay the city a pittance $6M and the city easily spends more than that maintaining, staffing, and securing the city on game day.  It's already a handout to the Bears.

Atlanta recently went through this with the Braves and it worked out really great for everyone.  The Braves got their entertainment district paid for by Cobb County, Georgia State got a football stadium of their own, and the neighborhood around Turner Field finally gentrified because the biggest impediment was the acres of asphalt needed for Braves parking.  Those are replaced with apartments and condos now.

After 100 years, the Bears have decided to build themselves a stadium. Must be a Chicago thing. The White Sox played in Comiskey for 81 seasons before they built their current one. The Blackhawks played in Chicago Stadium for 65 years. The Cubs, meanwhile, haven't built a stadium for themselves since 1893.

Too bad they built all those corporate boxes and seats in front of them. I remember one of the proposed stadium redesigns from back in the day wanted to reorient the playing field to an east-west direction and have the colonnades above each end-zone while the seating would be between them. It got rejected because it was too good of an idea probably didn't have enough corporate skyboxes to sell.

/Bears wouldn't be in this predicament if they built the damn McDome at McCormick Place back in the day

So the Packers will be the only real NFC "North" team left. The other three will all be indoor football in oversized gymnasiums. I would say that hopefully the Bears will at least do what AZ and LV did and have real grass inside, but after seeing how inept Chicago is at maintaining a decent playing surface at their current stadium, maybe going plastic is best.

Time for realignment, where the Packers, Browns, Bills and Steelers become the Men's Football division, while the Bears, Lions, and Vikings get relegated to the Farking Hell, Nancy, Just Move To Boca division.

As a STH, I'm excited about this move.  I did chuckle at the wording of the letter, and the repeatedly emphasized 'If'.  This was a positive step in the right direction, and should prevent the City of Chicago from causing further media distractions for the team with 'redesigns', etc.  They've firmly said, "Fark off, we're busy thinking."

The usage of the space will be positive - one of the elements of having Soldier Field is the proximity to *so many things*, having the additional space will allow for all of those amenities to be both upgraded, and provided to fans on gameday.  You will likely hear some incredibly acidic comments from people who never attended games, but profited from their proximity - the bars, parking lots, stores, condo owners, etc.

This will be a net positive experience - better parking, better fan experiences, safer environments, and more flexibility.

Nothing ends a good game experience like disgruntled and drunk shiatheel fans who can't travel more than walking distance because of their chronic alcoholism.  Having it be a destination will improve things.

The nostalgia factor is nice so long as facilities are being upgraded, and they haven't been for a long time.  The veneer of 'amazing' ends when you start visiting other stadiums for sports.
