Ill agree, first read it when it first came out. One of the best books I've ever read that will put an image in your head. His description of the Manitou was terrifying to 15-year-old me

Hell of an author. Add me to the list of people who discovered him through The Talisman, and learned to love his work. And yes Ghost Story was outstanding.

My best friend is a die-hard Stephen King fan. She owns and has read everything he's written, multiple times.

But when asked what her favorite Stephen King novels is, she says "The Talisman" without any hesitation. She figures she's read it over 100 times.

Straub will be missed. I personally have never read anything by him, but he was the OTHER giant of the genre, next to King.

/THE MAN MADE VAMPIRES GOTH! That, arguably, might be the most, in all of history, copied characterization. Even Stoker wouldn't call Dracula a Gothic Horror novel, he called it a "mental terror where dread and malaise are shared in equal measure."

Meaning, altogether, that Peter Straub is the most copied author this far into the future .. and that's not changing anytime soon.

Glad you like his stuff. I'm not familiar with his work. I have seen Hamlet a few times and "good night, sweet prince" is a line uttered to Hamlet as he dies.

One my oldest possessions that wasn't bequeethed to me as an heirloom, is a hardback Talisman i got when i was like 11. I'm 47 now.    Started re-reading it not long ago.   The Duffer brothers supposedly bought up the rights to it.  I know Speilberg had the rights for a good long while.

I strongly recommend reading "Ghost Story".  You can get good used copies on ebay for under $6. Money well spent IMHO.

relax, karen. you know, more than a few of the folks on this site weren't even been born until the 90's. they found him, and that's what matters.

/personally, my favourite from him is koko.

trust your best friend's judgement if not some random person from the interwebs and read The Talisman. It's great.

His books are incredible.  ghost story is one of my all-time favs.  The movie was also excellent.

I tried to read Hellfire Club and it was fantastic, but WAY WAY WAY too much rape for me.  Had to put it down.

Actually I discovered him in 1975 with this book.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_(novel)

Then in 1979 he wrote my favorite of all his books. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Story_(Straub_novel)

I've read every book he wrote from 1975 going foward, but still think "Ghost Story" is his best work.

I was 22-23 years old when I discovered Peter Straub.

Also Shadowland, Juliia and If You Could See Me Now. I was less enamored of his big gritty hits (the Throat, which I think was his personal favorite, etc.).

Read Shadowland too, good book, can't remember why or what but there was something made me sad about the end.

Was going to read The Talisman, but didn't for some reason.
Think I was burned out on King.

Speak for yourself, Karen. I picked up The Talisman in 85, when I was 11. It wasn't remotely my first King book. I'm not sure how much earlier you would have wanted me to learn about Straub, but I'd call 37 years of fandom pretty f*cking good.

It always took me twice as long to read Straub than any other author. English wasn't my besterest subject. It was always worth it though. I'm pretty sure I first bought Shadowlands recommended by SK on the back of one of his novels (Firestarter I think)

Still waiting for the Talisman movie......

I read Black House before The Talisman, but I think it was the better book.  Probably had more to do with Straub, but I've yet to read his solo stuff.

I discovered him as a teenager, long before he wrote The Talisman.  Mom was a librarian.  Whenever he or King (or Kuntz for that matter) had a new book out she grabbed it and the whole family read it before it ever hit the shelves.

I met him and his wife Linda when I was showing them around a conference they were funding. They were super nice folks. I got a copy of Ghost Storysigned by him and loaned it to an asshole who never gave it back. I had fantasies about tracking him down and getting a new signed copy. Guess I'm farked now on that front.

Thanks for being such a god guy, Peter.
