Doesn't look like he had picked up the first yet but he had room and blockers.

Someone's going to get some serious training on committing to either punting or fake punting.

Typo. They thought it was about a putter.

Defense was coming up from behind and had hands on him as he was kicking.  And he had about 6 more yards to go.  Had he committed to running for the 1st from the get-go, maybe he could have made it.  But I'd guess they'd have pulled him down 2 yards short of the line to gain.  And the punt he pulled off was a pretty good one, burying them inside their own 10.  All things considered, it wasn't a terrible play.

So, I generally agree with your assessment, except that he was so far past the line of scrimmage that there's no way it would not be a penalty. Here's where he needs to be a football player, lower his shoulder and try to run over a guy. Failing to make a first down would have been bad, but at least there wouldn't have been a penalty tacked on. I also understand that it was a snap judgment that he had to make in a split second... but it was the wrong one.

Needs a little coaching on the yard markers but, I agree, everyone makes mistakes a decent punt!

Poor kid, screwed up his fake with botched training.

I'm not opposed to making that legal.

See this is the correct take: Exciting play, interesting outcome, I'd like to see more of this.

I mean, if you kick it after a first down your own team is gonna be pissed so no one would do that. Kicking it anywhere behind the LOS is legal. So we could make it legal to punt from anywhere and it wouldn't affect THAT many plays. We'd maybe get more of these plays, too!

I think the No Fun League could do with this sort of open field play.....

Maybe the rule should just be that you CAN punt from anywhere but if you're beyond the LOS then you touched the ball first and therefore you can't recover a muffed punt. That's probably enough of a disincentive to keep it from happening for the most part.
