And yet they still have a decent chance at the playoffs again this year (though the division is rough). Just imagine if they hit on any of these picks

Well, I can't blame Gruden for Ruggs drunk driving at 100 mph.

I would have guessed that the Raiders first draft was in 1960, or 1970 if you only want to count NFL drafts.

The Lions saw this headline, got a splinter in their paw and hobbled back to their den.

Look at how many draft picks prior to the draft that the Patriots took Mack Jones and Barmore that are still on the team.

/That's Belichick GMing...

Which is what happens when pretty much any coach becomes the GM. Which makes me a liiitle bit nervous that Mike Tomlin is now pretty much the de-facto GM. At least when it comes to player acquisition

Wasn't the Raiders drafting a punter the reason both leagues joined together? They know what they're doing......jk....

At least this first rounder didn't kill anyone.  So, that's progress of a sort...

Are they still drafting the fastest wide receiver possible, regardless of team need or the said receiver's ability to catch a ball?

Was this guy even that bad? Never saw him play. Pro football reference put him at an 8 AV, which is solidly decent for a starter.

Had the physical tools but tossing around schemes did him no favors.  He was a liability at RT and they couldn't even hide him at RG which kind of limits your roster viability.  I'm surprised Dallas or Chicago or some of the other teams with horrendous o-lines don't bring him in right away.

Say what you will about sunk costs, but I imagine teams want to give first-round picks every chance to succeed and give them enough rope to do so. To cut ties with Leatherwood after a single season indicates that he must be not just bad, but horrific, to the point of being unplayable and a liability even in practice.

And that's what I would say to anyone who thinks "hey, maybe my team should claim him, since he's still the same guy who earned at least a second-round grade a year ago; a second-round grade is still pretty good." No, he is not still the same guy. One year of NFL tape and team performance reviews are more telling about his abilities than four years of college.

Once he clears waivers, I'm sure some team will kick the tires and give him at least a shot at a practice squad. I would say his odds of turning it around and becoming a successful NFL player are very long.

They did, but the news didn't break until recently so it's not like you should have known

I'm surprised by the move on Mullen. I thought he did a decent job in a secondary that wasn't good last year.

Leatherwood though, not surprised at all. Strange pick that struggled at the NFL level. Maybe he'll catch on somewhere but he's not good and it looks like the coaches don't see any potential for improvement.

Calling him "porous" would be kind. He was tried across the line and they never found a gap he could fill.

I think only Tampa bay might be getting desperate enough for large warm bodies to use Leatherwood

I don't know how things were under the Mayock-Gruden regime, but this also has the markings of a Tom Cable pick. Back in Seattle, they took a lot of dicey offensive linemen in the draft, and the story was that Cable hand-picked them to mold them into his kind of player. He had exactly one big success story, converting J.R. Sweezy from a college DT into a starting NFL OG. That earned him a reputation as some kind of offensive line wizard who could spin flax into gold, until enough bad moves -- Germain Ifedi in the first round, Rees Odhiambo in the third, Luke Joeckel for a contract where the team appeared to have bid against itself -- disabused everyone of that notion.

Cable seems to have had a similar path in Las Vegas, inheriting a really good line several years ago and turning it into a mediocre group, with just one arguable success story in Kolton Miller and a whole bunch of oddball lottery tickets.

I can't remember the regime, but I was thinking about Robert Gallery the other day. He was there a while, but didn't quite have the success they hoped for.

I recall Robert Gallery being hyped as once in a generation, can't miss, guaranteed future hall of famer.

I no longer pay much attention to the draft.

Just they had the worst line in the league or darn near it so another body couldn't make them much worse.

Chicago signed him this morning.
