Good thing we didn't resort to a bake sale for our military hardware.  Be real embarrasing if Australia had to arm their population. Of course, China may still be a paper tiger. Hopefully we won't find out, since we spend too much on our military.

Sun Tzu is awesome.  Some of my favorite quotes:
1. Attack someone who is not your enemy.
2. Attack your enemy where you aren't.
3. The best defense is to hide in your enemy's mother's skirts.
4. Victory comes from finding problems in opportunities.
5. Always leave an army a toilet, they will go.

Australia isn't so stupid as to think that arming the general population does anything but getting their own civilians killed by one another.  The USA has been a fine case study of watching that derp happen over and over.

China doesn't currently have anywhere near the effective force projection capabilities to fight a war on Australian soil.  Being able to pick on the islands in the South China Sea doesn't make them a global military threat.

Besides it's much easier for China to just buy everything in Australia than go to war.

Many will say a tough response made them pull back. It's more likely they're feeling out how we'll respond to various scenarios.

THIS.  People seem to forget that war is just very expensive diplomacy.  Working through trade deals and getting foreign entities hooked on your merchandise, oil, trade, etc. can be more effective and costs a HELL of a lot less.

My father was a Navy helicopter pilot.  In the late 80's, he got invited to a party on Embassy Row.  Dress uniform kinda thing.  There were some Chinese dignitaries there.  The brought a Chinese pilot up to meet him and said, "This is Li Chen.  He is the first Chinese pilot to land a helicopter on one of our Naval ships.  How many times have *you* done that?"

My father calmly replied, "546 times."  They gave him a look like he'd farted in their face and walked away.  I'm sure they've made advancements since then, but they started waaaaay behind the US in terms of terms of technology and experience.  They have generations of lessons to learn in terms of logistics and process refinement.

That's exactly why I shake my head at everyone who freaked out that China bought a half-assed carrier from Russia and got it running.  Carrier ops are complicated as hell, and the US Navy carries out ops in some of the worst weather.

The article is looking at this as an external issue but it's more of an internal one.  China's rhetoric put them way ahead of their skis in a position where they weren't willing to follow through with the threats they were making.  So after Pelosi called their bluff the PLA response, as big as it was, was nowhere near the scale of the threats they were making prior to the visit.  That resulted in a lot of internal criticism and blowback about how weak and pathetic it made China look.  So the more temperate response this time is likely an attempt to align their words with the scope of the actions they're willing to take.

Meh. China can't project power well, but they have plenty to make a regional war where the US has to project, and they get to sit and shoot at what we project, very unpleasant. Their military budget is #2 in the world by a mile, and really not far off when it comes to equipment spending from the US when you measure by value they can get for their money.  If Russia was overestimated, I think China is underestimated. At least they will be by 2030 or so.

The Chinese military will not fight.  Paper tiger.  All of this posturing is just a way to get them more influence via the UN.  These punks won't fire a bullet that's on target on a piece of paper.

I would consider that a valid follow up to all the Pelosi bluster.   They did nothing.  Then we ran 2 cruisers through there and they did nothing.   Making this valid news for the purpose of "China talked smack, did nothing.  Don't listen to China, they aren't relevant."

Anyone can just buy everything
But is really about holding everything.
A country attack you, f*ck their domestic assets.
Its been done before and will be done again. The concept of ownership relies on both parties following the same rules.

Well, it doesn't take much force projection to fight people armed with clubs. See Iran and Asia, where all they can do is protest then get beat up by punks with sticks. Ukraine which had the will and the industry still has standing orders to pick up Russian rifles - there aren't enough. But Australia's so completely weapons adverse there's no industry for that at all. Even actual military equipment - one major hurdle for the nuke subs to be built in Aus is no native nuclear program.
China is actively establishing bases that can have no other purpose than to cut off the US from Australia. This would give them the option of blockading until they get their demands.  Aus naval focus right now is controlling the seas long distance away to prevent that via submarines they have to buy.
Unarmed population just invites colonization. Why work hard when you got punks with sticks?
China needs those natural resources. Part of the Ukraine war I think is to secure food for Russia and their allies.
Australia better hope China is a paper tiger or gets f'd up.
So, AR-15 or Chinese Speak N' Spell. What are your children playing with?
