Why won't the world do what Fox News wants it to do? Stupid world.

I like this. But when I saw the headline I thought the premise would be that Pelosi would be traveling to other places that hostile foreign nations would hate her doing.

The UK announced a few weeks ago that it was going to base nuclear submarines in Australia, where they can patrol in China's back yard.
I would be surprised if China hadn't seen how the world has reacted to Russia over Ukraine and realised that if they attempted the (far harder) invasion of Taiwan they'd get the same response.

Pelosi has been a strong supporter of Taiwan and human rights inside China for her entire congressional career.

Despite the GOP propaganda, she has always been a bad ass, trail blazer, and leveraged the Speakership for the greater good rather than her own self enrichment. She's been the most effective House leader and Speaker since Sam Rayburn.

That's kinda cool actually. I generally think of her as an accomplished politician who is the definition of the out of touch old democrat who needs to move on, but if this was something that entered her calculus I didn't see it coming, and it is impressive.

She still needs to yield the field to younger more progressives.

Fixed it for you.
Ukraine has shown that whatever the Western governments' hesitations about putting boots on the ground to avoid escalating a conflict, they're more than willing to send both military and humanitarian aid.

oh unless you mean the one or two that "maybe, could be, might be" sent to Perth, with British crews, and "may" stay there for a few months at most. Perth is nowhere close to China, f*ckstck. i know that in England you can spit from one coast to the other, but Australia's a bit bigger than that.

First, intentionally defaulting on our loans is an option of last resort. Everyone loans us money at cheap rates because we never, ever default.

We also depend on them for their ability to cheaply manufacture everything we use in our daily lives: clothing, electronics, bicycles, furniture, etc.

The recent supply chain issues is a modest preview of what would happen if they intentionally shut us out of their economy.

And sending British subs to Australia as a stop gap has been widely reported.

The long term idea for the Australian/UK/US deal is for Australia to have a base for its subs which the UK and US can use as forward bases for their subs as well.

Perth is three thousand miles from the South China Sea. The UK is fifteen thousand miles away via the Cape.

So it's far closer than the UK is, and nuclear subs can stay underwater on patrol for months.

Dude this has been widely reported for the last year in Australian, UK and US media, as well as pissing off the French when Australia cancelled their sub order to come to the UK for nuclear boats. The size of Australia is the reason they are going nuclear. A diesel boat would need refuelling every few days, giving its position away. It would have to sail four thousand miles just to get to the other side of the country.

Why are you trying to pretend I'm the only source for this?

And ask Ukraine how good the UK is in following through. We led the rest of Europe in supporting and supplying Ukraine with weapons and intel. Zelensky just gave Boris a medal because we've done so much for them.

A gracious thank you from Australia would have been nice.  And an apology for Neighbours.

Once Australia has its own boats there will be less need for the UK and US to base ours there. But until then doing so will help deter China from trying anything and provide training for Australians on operating them so when you do get yours you will have crews ready to go.

i doubt China will do anything to Australia; they might invade Taiwan but they won't launch anything at Australia within the next decade *unless* we are hosting nuclear subs. although we'll probably join in whatever war happens anyway. then NZ would have to join in too, and it would be a massive clusterf*ck.
they're going to get even more smug about not allowing nuclear-powered vessels in their waters, but still expect those boats to protect them.

hey, you can have Kylie back, that's alright. but you also have to promise to keep Australian semi-celebrities there, like Peter Andre. you might not know of him, but last i heard he's still over there, and that helps me to relax. keep him and his storage containers full of hair gel. he's an environmental disaster waiting to happen.
