Who are the old MTV format work today? I've always wondered that if they had VJ's and social media interaction. Artist wouldn't need to be in the studio.  Show some concerts at night. Maybe some exclusive stuff. I know fees to probably play some of that stuff probably make it a challenge.
Even shows of people talking about music like that Metal Show.
One of my favorite things about the old MTV was the week in rock.

Closely behind are Harry Styles and Doja Cat, who received six nominations apiece, while Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Tayler Swift and The Weeknd each have five.

I thought Tayler Swift was a porn star. Taylor Swift, on the other hand...

What is wrong with MTV having a music video awards show? ABC plays the Oscars, and when was the last time you saw a recent Best Picture winner on ABC? And CBS plays the Tony's and you are probably even less likely to see a Broadway musical on CBS.

The best part of old MTV was just the ability to discover new music. Today's algorithms are just terrible at it, if your tastes aren't locked into a single genre. The radio stations used to be also decent at it, until they were consolidated into a single entity that only plays the current records the MPAA are pushing.

One of my favorite things about the old MTV was the week in rock.

MTV changed its formats from music videos all the time to programs because the programs got better ratings.

Check out the book "I Want My MTV", it's very informative and an utter blast to read, especially if you were there at the time. We got cable (with MTV) in my podunk town in ~1982, when I was 15. I quit watching loads of MTV around 1992, when I got my first full-time post college job, and which corresponds roughly to the point MTV began really morphing into whatever it is now. One thing that amazes me is how things that my memory says were very discrete periods separate from one another actually were happening simultaneously. And other things were WAY earlier than I remembered (If had asked me prior to the book when Thriller dropped, I would have said post-85. Nope. It actually dropped in fall '83).

/also, if you ever wondered, there was a lot of cocaine involved. A LOT.

What kind of figured once they had success outside the music videos that was the direction they wanted to go into. But just a shame it even went away from music related shows. MTV Unplugged in the 90s was a cool thing sometimes. But I remember after 9/11 they were trying to explain why the war was going on and who was who.

My understanding is that a big part of it was also the fact that in the early days of MTV they weren't paying any kind of royalties to artists/record companies when they played videos. So they were basically getting free content, sometimes videos that cost millions. When record companies realized this, and how much money MTV was making they asked for a cut. And now MTV was in a position where they had to pay for content on their channel, and none of it they actually owned. So they started making original programming that they actually had control over.

I changed channels when i saw some male singer performer showing off in chaps with his pasty flat ass.
It like they are daring us to be disgusted, these days.
