(NPR)   Florida is home to a tree called the manchineel tree that's so toxic, one bite of its apple can kill you, even just standing under it during a rainstorm can cause "excruciating pain and blisters." This was probably figured out by Florida Man   (npr.org) divider line

Oh nice it's Florida's version of the Gympie Gympie plant from Australia, lol. The Gympie Gympie plant also has stinging leaves that give the person or animal excruciating pain.

The gympie gympie has stinging needles and lots of them, but it's not technically fatal unless you count suicide. Backyard Scientist, a Florida youtuber, stung himself with one on camera.

The death apple is stupid toxic, but It doesn't have spines IIRC. It can however kill you if you decide to eat the fruit or something.

We had a story on here within the last year about two kids Colombia dying after eating the fruit. I think the family was from somewhere in Venezuela where they didn't have these trees so the kids didn't know not to eat the fruit.

Indigenous people in Florida and the Caribbean used to dip arrowheads in the tree's poisonous, milky sap to kill their enemies, according to the University of Florida, and even tied others to the tree to ensure a slow and painful death.

As toxic as it gets. Tell him to keep his manchineel in his pants.

A quick bit of grafting could solve both those issues. Cross breed with kudzu and we could solve the Southern States real quick

Thank you for that.

/ wasn't the worst TOS episode, I'm always uplifted that whuzzizname came back to Earth and formed the Good Ole Boys country band.

// the "bonk bonk" ep was the worst.

Oh, Spock's Brain was terrible as were a few others (Plato's Step Children comes to mind), but in my mind The Way to Eden is the absolute worst. I don't remember an antagonist in a ST eppisode I disliked more than Dr.Sevrin and his merry band of morons. Even as a child I had no sympathy for them.

But they really look fabulous when you surround them with some Giant Hogweed [Chef's Kiss].

Native to the Caribbean, known locally there as "death apples" and often found in mangrove swamps.  Identifying and avoiding them is a key survival skill when hiking in the islands

I wonder how difficult wholesale eradication would be. I mean, these things stand out. I've had the experience of the sap, from a 'prank' where a buddy stuck his machete into a limb then dripped the sap on my arm. Still have the scars, 25+ years later. Like a drop of lava.

IIRC some poor ignorant schmoe in the Outback used some of the leaves as bush TP - committed suicide some weeks later.

These trees are all over the place in the US Virgin Islands. You go to the US National Park in St. John and there are plaques warning you about them. I live near Tampa now, the bug problem in Florida is nothing like what it is like in the true tropics down at the 18th latitude. We had guys come to spray the house and guest house once a month and we still had cockroaches plus other bugs. Had plastic containers for things like cereal, bugs still got into those too.
