Jon Peters turned his attention to Wild Wild West.

Did the original Sandman script have Morpheus fighting a giant spider?

They made the Corinthian....his brother??

I was not a big comics guy back in the early 90s.  I had heard of The Sandman and had planned to put the GN in my pile of literary deficit reduction reading.  Anyway, not used to reading comics, I started it, intrigued a bit, but distracted.  And then, I had access to the above-mentioned particular script of The Sandman (William Farmer draft) and I read it as a Cliffs Notes version of the story, and I farking hated it.  At that point in time, that farking script, tainted my view of The Sandman.  I put reading the series aside.  I thought, why is everyone raving about this thing?

I'm really glad that they ended up waiting to do this adaptation.  It's not really a movie.  Had to be done over several episodes, with a decent budget.

Gaiman is also being a bit coy about his actions on the development hell of The Sandman.  There were stories that he was going to go nuclear, publicly disavow a bad take on his material.  He was not going to just take the money and run.

I think he's been served well by waiting, with Good Omens and The Sandman getting done in excellent fashion.

Around that time the American Doctor Who reboot wanted to make the Doctor and the Master brothers as well.

It was a thing, I guess.

Blame Jon Peters, he's farking insane.  He tried to turn Kevin Smith's Superman into a trainwreck, and when he couldn't he took that insanity to Wild Wild West.

Thank goodness he stuck to his guns so that we could end up with a version of Sandman that has Despair depicted as a portly chick in jeans and crocks!

I mean is there anything that says you've given up more than a pair of Crocs?

Despair looked even more horrendous in the comics, you know.  Basically an ungroomed, more overweight, and completely naked version of what we got.  I'm cool with that change. Completely.

AICN is a site I haven't even thought about in a decade or so. Is Harry still alive? I know he was in bad health the last I'd heard.

I don't doubt it. When the showrunners on American Gods wanted Shadow & Audrey to have sex in the graveyard on on top of Laura's grave in the premiere, Gaiman said no.  He caught wind that they were going to do it anyway, so he rang them up and said, "Okay, guys, if you do that, I will go and step in front of a bus, and I will leave a suicide note explaining exactly why it was your fault."

They quickly dropped the idea.

Yes. There's a recent Gaiman interview where he mentioned that. Jon Peters was absolutely obsessed with filming a giant spider fight.

I'm sure he told Neil that they got Sandman because they're both from the streets.

God that sounded like red hot train wreck of shiat

The only real disappointments I had with the series were Lucifer height and wardrobe

And big annoyance that they cut out a lot of Deaths chipperness

With Peters involved, almost certainly.

Yeah, Netflix isn't going to have a nude fat woman in something they make. But it is true the whole thing is toned down to get rid of the horror element in the early comics. In the original, John Dee kills the woman who drives him to the place where the gem is held, and the dream(s) holding the kid are doing it for their own selfish purposes, not because they don't want to be a nightmare, among several other things.

One more bonus episode adapting Death: The High Cost of Living please!?!?!?!?!?!

I would blow Fred Durst while dressed as Carrot Top in a clown costume (redundant?) if it would help get that produced.

/The best thing about a successful Sandman adaption that reflects Gaiman's voice is that other producers see that reflecting Gaiman's voice in an adaption of his work can be successful.

The Ain't It Cool Article mentioned.

Script review starts about 2/3rds of the way down the page. First Harry has to do his "look at me" bit then Moriarty gives a summary of the original Sandman storyline before talking about the script.

That sounds like a typical AICN review.

I only read AICN once. I was in college and they reviewed the first Matrix sequel. By the way he wrote the review, I expected the film to be the equivalent of 12,000 orgasms. When the film turned out to be zero orgasms, I knew that site was worthless.

Wait, it was just after college. These details matter.

Harry might've been on the take, eventually, but he was still a bona-fide movie fan, so i did get some value from the site...Most notably, his DVD release reviews.    This was before streaming, so it was a useful way to know what movies, old and new, were coming to home video that month, and if they were any good.   Because of Harry, i discovered William Friedkin's Sorcerer film, which i'm thankful for.

Also remember him penning an epic review praising Speilberg's War of the Worlds, and another review slamming Spielberg's Crystal Skulls movie.   Agreed with him on both.
