Not quite new.  Just off the top of my head, they did pretty much the same thing with Fight Club.  It's mildly funny now, but how long before they start demanding these kinds of changes be incorporated into international releases as well?  Filmmakers already bend over backward reworking material to be friendly to Chinese audiences, and their government isn't about to loosen their grip one bit once they figure out they can get away with requiring more direct control.

Chinese films have always had endings where any punishment due is delivered. I seem to recall one Bruce Lee film where the western release has him just walk away and the Chinese one has him arrested as he'd killed people so justice had to be seen to be served.

Paramount effectively told China to f*ck off with Top Gun: Maverick.  Now, in the near term, there was no way that China was going to let in a "rah-rah American military!" movie, regardless.  That said, specifically re-inserting the Taiwan patch just might impact how China views any Paramount picture for a while.

The Big Boss?  I don't know that the western version had a different ending, the version I saw was dubbed and had the cuts they made to the western release, but it still ended with his arrest.  It was actually kind of an awesomely mind-blowing ending as a teenager, brought you back to reality hard.  "Hell yeah, badass revenge story with the punching and kicking and one guy getting knocked through an ice cutter!  Wait, holy shiat, yeah, he did just kill a whole bunch of people, nobody's going to care that he felt like he had a good reason."  Revenge movies end in the hero's death all the time, but never end like that.  It contrasted nicely with how it was so important that he'd promised his family he wouldn't fight and stuck with that for most of the movie.

I think most American movies might be on the outs with China. The last few Marvel movies going back to Shang-Chi and Eternals weren't shown there. If I'm remembering correctly there was some brouhaha around those movies and the actors/directors offending the Chinese for various reasons. So maybe that's why

same with Infernal Affairs, in them original the corrupt cop walks off back to work. In the Mainland version he get arrested. it is nothing new.

I think most American movies might be on the outs with China.


More because of the economic down turn the government wants to promote more domestic productions and make sure they get return on investment, which keeps the money and investment in China, in stead of sending all to Disney. Most countries behave this way.

"You offended us" is a good cover for "we need to boost our economy", it also gives the internet nationalists something to be agree about because they will always get angry at an outside "threat" before internal problems.
