I've been back to the Opera only once since the Plague struck - in the lull between original omicron variant and BA5. Sorry, the Plague is still real. Long COVID.scares me.

The "CDC Community Level" for my county remains "High". I'm still wearing a mask indoors and avoiding crowds. Concerts and other forms of public entertainment are great, but continuing to not catch COVID is much more important.

Movie Theater attendance are still down 30% from 2019, with Regal about to file for bankruptcy.

Sitting on the couch watching HBOMax is the arts and entertainment version of telecommuting.

If people don't want to get dressed and commute in to downtown to go to an office, and won't even get dressed to go to a local cineplex, what makes you think they're oh-so willing to go to an entertainment event?

The local theater group I'm in hosted a drag show. Which generated its own publicity courtesy of outraged, pucker mouth, Christian Kravitzes. There were threats. The press got in on it.
We sold out.
I had fun just being undercover security.
I mingled with the "offended" and kept an eye out for weapons.
God knows you can't count on the cops for security.
We might do a B&B drag murder mystery weekend.
The B&B gets booked up. Local businesses get a boost. We could sell more tickets.

Everyone's DVR is overflowing with amazing content and it feels like there's no way to watch it all, so,nobody wants to pay $185 a ticket plus the $22 convenience fee to have the ticket emailed to their phone just to see the wheelchair kid from Glee star in a revival of Starlight Express.

Concert tickets appear to have at least doubled in price since before the pandemic. There have been a lot of shows I would have gone to if it would have cost less to go.

I guess nobody wants to see poorly written plays based on poorly written movies anymore.

I may never get to see Spiderman The Musical.

If you want a good seat for even a touring company show, it'll cost you at least a couple of hundred dollars.  I'll probably just be seeing community theater and live music at local bars for the time being (which I guess is good for the local economy anyway).

This - more or less.
People still don't want to take the extra risk of going to a live performance especially when there's so much available online.
Maybe we should create robotic versions of ourselves to attend the theatre (& dance at the disco)?

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: Nobody's got any money.

That and the ticket prices have tripled at some venues. Not a good combo for attendance numbers.

There are a couple of factors. A large portion of the audience has always been older, one of the demographics hit hardest. Even for the shows that skew towards a younger audience, say millennials and Gen X instead of Boomers+, the audiences for the performing arts tend to be better educated and more leery of the pandemic. It's a perfect storm for smaller audiences than usual.

The feeling of being packed in like sardines was already an annoyance in pre-Covid times.  Now that forced closeness can kill you.  No thanks.

FOMO is real and it's all to do with what's streaming these days.  The phenomenon started with Game of Thrones by forcing HBO to come up with some way of unbundling their content from the cable giants.  Of course, GOT was a huge multi-year, multi-million dollar enterprise.  During the pandemic, FOMO came in the far cheaper form of the likes of shows like Tiger King.  The trend has been set and I don't think there's any going back.

In the before times, went to see "Kinky Boots" on Broadway. Had pretty good tickets too. BUT, the barely padded, lumpy, seats were made to fit someone who may have been 5' tall and perhaps 95 pounds. Unbelieveably uncomfortable. I'd had back surgery a few years earlier too. A few minutes into the show, I was in eye watering pain and the very nice usher could see that as she moved us to a couple of seats that were a bit larger.
I am 6' tall, skinny Farkette, and generally have learned how to fit into what passes as normal sized seating. About the only comfortable theatre seats are at the Met, and they know at their prices and how long your butt is going to be sitting, they'd better make the seats comfortable.
Vaxxed, boostered, masked, still got a mild form of COVID in June. I don't want to repeat that. No desire right now to go to live entertainment/movies, not that I did durning COVID.

2022-08-23 9:08:31 AM
I went to a show a while ago... I chose one heavily favouring the geriatric crowd.  Everyone was wearing a high quality mask, and you know if there had been any COVID there they'd most likely have died before making it to their seats.

Unfortunately the show was Chicago, which is mediocre at best.

I was never frequently going to the theater prior to COVID.  I have a decent home setup, free of idiots yapping during the film.   With so many flicks going to streaming quickly after release + ticket prices, I have even less incentive to go now.

As for concerts... I think I'm just getting old.  There's a few acts I'd like to see live at this point, but they are very few and far between.  I've seen most of the acts I ever wanted to, most during their peak, and the ones I never took an opportunity to see are now well past their prime.

With the propensity for backing tracks etc during "live" performances + obnoxious ticket prices, again.. even less inclination.

Never was a play / musical attendee, so can't comment there.

2022-08-23 9:32:35 AM
When the only tickets you can get for under $50 are for unsigned bands at your local spot, there's very little enthusiasm for a Big Show.  I'd love to see a guy from my youth play, but if I have to spend $200 to watch from the far bleachers it just sucks all the joy out of the moment.  Theater tickets are even worse, I farking waited four (five?) years to spend $600 on two tickets to Hamilton at the Boston Opera House, with like one original cast member returning to reprise her role of Schuyler Sister #3.

Great show.  Not worth the money.  Promised it would be the last show I spent that much cash on, in my life.

Fark speculation != Knowing

Shiat like this is how people who spend too much time in one social media bubble think they know everything, so therefore "know" the election was stolen, for example.

The fark speculation in this particular case being a safe bet is beside the point.

If you get a chance, see a performance at one of the Lincoln Center theaters or Carnegie Hall. You'll get the appeal.

When it comes to classical performances, the talent pool is global with many of the biggest draws based in Asia and Europe. If they can't travel, audiences won't attend.

The only production I wanted to see after lockdown was Bill Pullman in To Kill a Mockingbird. It was the last thing I saw before COVID and his portrayal of Atticus Finch rivaled Gregory Peck. They decided not to bring it back. I think there's still some legal issues with Harper Lee's estate.

CSB: I track weekly grosses for Broadway - it's a hobby that I'm hoping to turn into a side hustle.

It's definitely true that grosses are down across the board, but they're returning toward pre-covid amounts pretty quickly. The way I'm interpreting it (and I'm not actually an expert - more a well-informed amateur) is that covid fear is keeping people away but slightly less so every month/week.

I'm also noticing that ticket prices are down more than ticket sales, which makes sense for Broadway specifically because many/most shows use dynamic pricing (similar to airlines), where prices go down to compensate for less demand. So there's likely also people who are noticing good deals who wouldn't go to see shows otherwise.

The big blockbusters like Lion King, Wicked, Hamilton, etc., which drive the lion's share of ticket sales are largely back to normal. Interestingly, Phantom of the Opera is struggling hardcore. My understanding is that while all of these shows have relied on tourists forever, Phantom relied specifically on international tourists, and international tourism is lagging well behind domestic tourism. There were lots of rumors in 2020/21 that Phantom wasn't even going to try to reopen.

A) Still using that DVR, huh?

2) Most of your amazing content is probably superhero streaming trash

D) If you're able to financially etc., there's no replacement for seeing a good (i.e., not Glee-related) live performance in a real theater with a real crowd. People who say otherwise sound too much like George Costanza when he insists on drinking Pepsi instead of wine.

I miss live performances. A lot. Jazz, rock, classical, theater, art shows. I miss crowded bistros on Saturday night and quiet elegant restaurants. I miss being able to support, financially and with my presence, the talented and creative people who bring beauty, fresh perspective, or insightful critique to the human condition.

It's lonely.

But I'm not chancing COVID because too many marauding plague rats are *still* out there spreading disease. Underlying conditions.

When does it end?  I don't know. And I'm farking tired of constantly asking myself that question. Tired of weighing my every chance to go out as yet another potentially life-damaging roll of the dice because ignorant ego weasels exist.

This.  Whatever TM is calling itself now is counting on getting its cut of the household savings that grew during the early stages of COVID. fark that noise. Let the market rebalance.

Plus too many one-show-a-year toolsheds ready to ROCK OUT at gigs right now to pay extra for the privilege of dealing with them.

I'm a classical musician.

I almost never go to classical performances, unless they're friends' recitals.  Because I don't want to pay money to see most of the music these institutions are putting on. The same operas and symphonies we've been playing for generations. Imagine if Broadway near-exclusively put on only pre-1950 musicals or pre-1850 plays.

As I am fond of saying, Fark truly is the only site where the majority of commenters are still in a late 2020 mindset regarding COVID. Everyone else has either given up or was never that strict to begin with. Bubbles, I guess.

While I understand and share your concerns about getting Covid, at this point you can't expect the rest of society to put their lives on hold for you and me.  Yes it sucks that I can't live the life I had in the before times because I live with someone who is immune compromised .  If I could be living a fully normal life, I would, but sometimes life just ain't fair.
