There's a guy I work with who refused to get the vax because he 'didn't trust Sleepy Joe' (his exact words), but would have gotten one if it was available under Trump because he was 'God's holy and righteous champion' (again, his words)

He's refusing it now? Why didn't he get it for the two years 'God's holy and righteous champion' was in office?

Might be that it's all bullshiat.

I had my chance, and I took it.

That doesn't mean I'm not going to be getting more booster shots in the future though.

Meh. It's just more middle class/upper middle class/rich people hypocrisy...

When COVID hit, most people (selfishly) wanted everyone to make personal sacrifices for the greater good. And the people most loudly advocating for these sacrifices were the ones most able to. I already worked from home, had a job that could be remote, had a company that gave paid time off...but we don't fight to guarantee those things for poor people. When it doesn't suite us, we ignore them.

But once we get scared... Then it's all 'We are all in this together!!!!'

And now that regular middle class and richer types aren't scared anymore, it's all, 'Why should we pay for the unwashed masses?!?! Can't we just call them heroes and have them die cheaply for us!!!'

We're still averaging 400 deaths a day.

Biden's admin has simply given up. The CDC has lost all trust, and disabled and immunocompromised folks have been completely thrown under the bus.

Between this and monkeypox, this is a heavy black mark on Biden's legacy.

Yeah, I still think that coworker is a dipshiat, but the only way you got a vaccine before January 20th, 2021 was being in a high-risk group.

What do you say about all the flip-flopping liberals who went around saying the "Trump vaccine" was being rushed, developed too fast, approved just to get him reëlected, etc. and then they turned around and became pro-vaccine as soon as Biden was in office? Kamala was campaigning and blathering about "Trump vaccines" and not taking them - I'm pretty sure she's had several of them now.

The funny thing, a lot of us--myself included--didn't initially trust the vaccines because they were developed and deployed under Trump. We assumed that he'd politicized it or pushed it out before it was ready, or simply didn't want to trust anything that he had had anything at all to do with.

Then we looked at the numbers, listed to the science, and changed our minds. Evidence is a powerful force, but only for those willing to examine it. That co-worker was apparently unable to make that mental leap, and probably never will.

Might as well start charging for the vaccine now. It's not going to change anything, especially for people like that.

Once something has a price, it is perceived as being valuable and rare.

Want American's to get a vaccine? Price it at $1k USD, but have some "loopholes" where people can get it free. Watch them scratch and bite to get a covid shot before anyone else, especially "them poors".

Like how they got potatoes to be popular. Put it out of reach of the common person, but look the other way when a few go missing after a half-hearted chase..

Here in the Great White North I believe I read the other day that only 40% of people have bothered with additional boosters.  So those first shots are waning in effectiveness and were already compromised against newer variants.

Farking idiots everywhere.  The government needs to step up and drag the screaming babies into the vaccination clinics because it's the right thing to do to protect not just them, but everyone else around them.  We're going to pay for this in a lovely diffuse way as substantial portions of the population have reduced health long before what should be their declining years.

For the richest, you're probably not worth much after ~45.  Unless you make your money in the healthcare sector.

Maybe that's what we need to do... divide up the wealthy and get them fighting each other over who owns the biggest share of the poor and middle classes.

Want to drive, vote, enter a government building or ride in public transport? Get your damn vaccines and prove your kids are vaccinated. Not being vaccinated is nihilistic behaviour, and you should not be tolerated in civilization if you refuse.

Does he ever acknowledge long covid? Where's the push for improved indoor ventilation? What about the rapidly updated (free) vaccines he promised? Our current vaccines are outdated.

And what exactly do you suggest?

We're not exactly outliers.  We're mostly in the same boat as other developed countries. The whole pipedream of "full shutdown for two weeks!  Stop it completely!" won't work, because we'd never get all countries to join.  We've seen twice now that it takes just a few months for a new variant to spread form South Africa (why is it SA so often?) to knock out every other variant.

So what do we do - CovidZERO like China? Only martial law could get the entire country to fall in with that, and we've had enough flirting with dictatorship as of late, thank you.  The only real answer seems to be finding a way to speed up the rollout of updated vaccines.  It's now over half a year since the first Omicron variant hit, and still no Omicron based booster?

Yeah. I don't know why Democrats are intent on gaslighting the general public that they were the party of vaccination skepticism before the GOP was?

Like the Filibuster, and Nuclear Options, it's always the Democrats that do things first and then the GOP takes that action and turns it up to 11.

This whole country is a farce.

2022-08-21 11:16:25 AM

Izunbacol: why is it SA so often?

For a new variant to develop it takes someone with a compromised immune system. The immune system has to be low functioning to the point that:
1. It doesn't overwhelm with a huge immune response and kill the person too quickly, and;
2. It struggles to mount a sufficient immune response to quickly clear the viral infection.

Combine those two things and you get a virus that can mutate to other forms that more readily evade the immune response and more easily spread.

South Africa has a large HIV problem and not great medical care for all HIV+ people. This means there is a sizable population of people who can get COVID, struggle with it for a long while, and give the virus the chance to mutate into something different to be quickly spread.

You still believe the "latte factor" is why people can't afford a house.

It's a $100 vaccine. What the hell are you talking about a house now? Are you even reading the thread?

Flushing It All Away: psychosis_inducing: Flushing It All Away: This is fine. It's been over thirty months in this pandemic and 18 of which have been with the vaccine.

I am vaccinated, 2nd dosed, boostered, and boostered again and I'd do it all even if I had to pay for it.

If this little bit of money comes between you and you and your family's health, maybe you should figure out why that chai latte or that brunch last weekend is preventing you from having the least amount of consideration towards your neighbors and society at large?

Do you know how hard it is for a lot of people to come up with $100? Telling people in poverty to stop getting chai lattes says more about you than them.
