What gets me is, not one Texas republican gave a shiat for more than 10 seconds about him abandoning the state when people were dying and there was a crisis on.  They really truly do not give a shiat what he says or does.

There are many good people in Texas. I can attest to that from first-hand experience, having lived there for four years. The Republican oligarchy rules without the consent of the governed.

Like it or not, diesel is the fuel of last resort to keep major infrastructure working.  Hospitals, data centers, etc all have them.

That fuel is most likely to run generators that heat pipes, pumps, and other equipment so the main generation plant can stay online.

It's easier this way, we won't have to kick them off the grid if they secede. And knowing Texass' leadership, they'd try to steal electricity if they seceded, regardless.

2022-08-19 9:54:27 PM
Well I've done a few critical power systems and a weeks worth IS a lot of diesel for a backup generator. A regular building you usually have a few hours worth, until power can be restored.
A hospital, maybe up to 24 hours with.

The main thing is how big the generator is. A whole generator site could be 10s or 100s of megawatts, so a weeks worth of backup power at full load is a huge deal. A weeks worth at 5 MW wouldn't be worth much.

My advice, get out. Get out if you can. You've got maybe a decade before they start strapping people to the front of trucks with spikes on them and hoarding gas and water to survive in The Wasteland that will be most of what was formerly Texas.

Your other options will be to try and join a warband, I suggest finding a guy named Toecutter or similar to join up with when the time comes, try to get a fuel efficient motorcycle, maybe a Honda engine, they tend to be more fuel efficient, and in surviving The Wasteland, every ounce of petrol counts.

Most of the Toecutter gang had Kawasaki z900s or z1000s for the noise, one had a Laverda Jota for shiats and giggles.

My sister in law announced that she and her husband were leaving Texas for Colorado and taking their kids with them.

And she cited SCOTUS, education, the power grid, and climate.

My in laws FREAKED.

I'm trying to not monopolize threads with my personal crap but it is sooooo delicious!

Mrs VHTS and I were the bad guys when we left! But we were just weirdo liberals, right? Then the libertarian guy left Texas because he got a union job in Washington. Oh. Well, he's just looking out, he'll be back.

Yeah, no.

EVERYONE is leaving Texas who isn't stupid, evangelical, or over 45.

Eh.   Lots of liberal folks in texas, just outnumbered.  Don't wish horrible things on those who vote for it to change, and happen to be outnumbered.  The suck thing about democracy is that a majority can make things worse, even if the majority happens to be by plus one.  Work for change, don't sneer at the suffering.

I was questioning the article's "renewables" comment, but far down in the article, they say that the batteries are recharged at night using wind power.

I don't think they have a "use wind power" button, but... okay.

2022-08-19 10:22:44 PM
Didn't we just read that Texas has essentially zero renewable expertise on their energy advisory advisory committee?

Vistra spent just over $125 million on the batteries, which came online in May. The system includes 22,360 battery modules housed in 86 air-conditioned shipping containers that seem to stretch on and on.

FFS, you can see the end of them right there and it's not that far.
