Pffft.  If COVID didn't teach people around here to stock up properly, combined with the week plus of warnings we've had of strike action, I have no sympathy.  But I do have a full liquor cabinet and fridge...

Of all of the times I have visited Canada the only time a Canadian actually uttered "Eh?" in my presence was when I was picking up some beer store barley pop to take back to my hotel along with some Pizza! Pizza! to enjoy while waiting to see how ridiculous Don Cherry's suit would be for that evenings Hockey Night broadcast would be.

WA transitioned to private liquor sales

Oh, one of THOSE states.
ND isn't any better. You can go across the border to SD and buy beer and liquor in grocery stores... but not liquor on Sundays or federal holidays. Then only beer. 🤷‍♂🤬

But, if you need the F in the ATF, whatever whenever.

Wow, you guys actually did it right, privatization without a stupid 3 tier system. The rest of us have to deal with state warehouses and unnecessary middle men who will spend their last nickel lobbying against reforming the system.

I'm shocked that a strike at British Columbia's liquor distribution centres didn't affect tequila supplies in Virginia. I thought this was supposed to be the 21st century with a globalized world village and all that.

That's not so bad. In the early 2000s the trucking company that drove deliveries for all the major beer brands in a chunk of BC went on strike. For weeks. The stores quickly cleared out of all the major brands and it was carnage. I remember white shirted frat bros just wandering lost in the liquor store looking for anything that they recognized. That's when I started drinking more local craft beers and never went back.

It's not even a 3 bottle limit, it's 3 of the same thing. This is purely to stop hoarding, especially mass scale hoarding like we saw with toilet paper and hand sanitizer where folks bought up storage units of the stuff and price gouged on resale.

The only normal activity this will impact, is as stated upthread, is folks buying their own liquor for a wedding. And even there you can get several vodaks, several whiskeys, etc. and the worst that will happen is they might run out of your preferred brand before midnight.

"We're not Canadians, but just as an example, we're a household of four, and three of us will be lucky to survive the night if our fourth one doesn't get at LEAST twelve bottles daily. Good scotch, bad bourbon, floor wax, kerosene, the exact contents of the bottles don't have to be terribly specific so long as they're potent, but the quantity is quite critical for our continued good health."

No it's not, unless you can cite a recent court ruling that says otherwise the Excise Act hasn't been amended to allow non-commercial distilling without a license (last amended 7/1/22, nothing about that).

I'm sorry, our legal definitions are different, I mean there is no farking way an authority is going to arrest you for distilling unless you are unreasonable unsafe or handing it out

Uh it's 3 bottles each of 2 kinds of wine. And a bunch of other weird convoluted rules. But what you don't understand is that restaurants and bars are required to buy from government stores and they have to follow this too. Yeah the average drunk is fine but the bars will run out quickly.

Oh, yeah, that's not good. Here a restaurant or bar can't buy at retail, they must buy from a distributor (part of our stupid 3 tier system I mentioned upthread).

Just reminding people that this site is anonymous, all of you alcoholics are still safe and there is no need to outwardly panic.

Just don't drive anywhere.
Or be in a relationship.
Or desire someone.
Or get into confrontations.

Other than that, you should be content to be an alcoholic and not invite your consumption to impact someone else.

We also have private liquor stores up here, but the alcohol they sell all has to be supplied by, and purchased through the government (Liquor Distribution Branch), and some of those warehouses are under picket line right now..

Not just that, same thing is happening with legal weed up here😱

And re:not stocking up - I can only afford so many boxes of wine, and they go quick these days.

What, you don't remember the people lined up outside for an hour or two in the parking lot 2 meters apart on the chalked lines waiting because they only let 15-20 people in the store at one time, so even going was a massive hassle?  I mean, if you felt like wasting that kind of time every weekend, you do you, but I had Steam backlogs to kill and Netflix to watch.

Those laws boggle my mind...In Illinois, you go to the grocery store, and get whatever..
There are obviously specialty stores that sell higher end wines and stuff..All this goofy bureaucratic
nonsense for "morality" reasons just boggles me..There's no need for "state" stores..Just tax the stuff
appropriately and take in money without the need for the state to spend effort being a retailer..
JFC.. I don't even drink, and i find that whole situation with those kind of laws insulting..

Much of the public sides with the BCGEU. They're not asking for anything astronomical.

The union is also a bit of a canary being sent into the coal mine. Nurses are expected to have to strike later this year. Nurses are so underpaid and overworked that they're just leaving the industry and getting jobs elsewhere. ER's are closing as a result.

Funny thing about inflation. They always like to blame it on increasing wages and expenses, yet wages today are NOT going up - but corporate profits are through the roof. The supermarkets in Canada made big noises about giving employees - as 'essential workers' - temporary wage hikes, during the heavy restrictions of Covid. And then they posted record profits. In BC, they made a lot of noise about the floods last year, and having to increase prices as a result, and again - record profits. Those price increases haven't relaxed, of course.
