Why it matters:Former President Trump has survived a historic level of legal scrutiny over the past six years, fending off investigations that ensnared many of his top aides and allies. His downfall may ultimately stem from an archaic practice - preserving paper records - that he refused to approach like his predecessors.

Fairly diplomatic way to say he stole them.

Because Trump was taught by Cohn to operate like a mob boss and never leave a direct trail.

I have to say, it's worked pretty well for him. Law enforcement acts like it was impossible to ever convict anyone of a crime before email or texts existed.

There is another article floating around recently about how the CIA had to tailor its briefings to include pictures and graphs to keep TFGs attention focused.

Old news to most I know, but it just confirms what a lot of us have said.  Trump is Mike Teavee.

Lol -- when Trump tweeted out the infamous "Pence" text on J6, some Trump administration guy who testified to the committee said he read a print-out.

You'd think that guy - and everyone else in the cabinet - would've had his feed at the ready on their phone.

The whole government and legal system still operate like it's the 1800s or earlier. So much paper waste. Such slow processes. It's ridiculous.

Beyond the whole Treasonous shiatbags issue, my biggest problem with these morons (in this specific case) is a technical gripe... If you insist on having paper copies of all of this info, how hard would it have been to chain a boot-licking lackey like Stephen Miller to an office copier deep inside Moron Lago and have him make copies of all the documents so they could return the originals quickly enough to avoid the DOJ colonoscopy? While I'm thankful for their incompetence, I think they should all be punished even more severely for it.

He's the kind of guy who wants to keep a girl's panties, not as a souvenir to remind himself of the time, as a trophy to show off as proof of his accomplishment to others. A coffee cup from Air Force One isn't good enough. It has to be something only a president could have.

Our counter-intelligence guys really missed an opportunity. They should have given him some fake secrets and said, "Don't let anyone see this!" Then they could have watched as the Russians acted on the wrong information.

I know there is a highlighter that when you use it on a document if you try to make a copy it will show up as a black line.

We haven't ruled out that our counterintelligence people did just that. Might be part of the DOJ investigation.

But her emails!

"Hillary Clinton did want to protect her emails from FOIA, but the emails she was concerned about were her personal emails. Unfortunately, her initial decision to use only a single email account-probably because she was technically illiterate and simply didn't understand why this was such a bad idea-turned everything into a circus."

I'd say the majority of people over a certain age qualify as technically illiterate.

Between the lines:The hectic final days of the administration, when Trump was consumed by the aftermath of Jan. 6 and his looming second impeachment, was the capstone for a president who had long skirted procedure for preserving records.
"When the rushed packing of the West Wing occurred after Jan. 6, these documents were no doubt still sitting around the residence," Moss said.

Ah. Thanks for carrying the "poor man was simply rushed" water, Axios.

It's like the time I was able to talk myself out of murder 1 when I explained the only reason there were all those bodies in my basement was I didn't have time to dispose of them discretely because I was running from the cops after a failed bank robbery.

Yes, there is. You can even buy it at Staples. So I'm pretty confident the feds have some kind of fancy 'explode on photocopy' security paper.

There is photosensitive paper that if photocopied turn solid black. I have zero idea if classified documents are sometimes printed on it but I have seen sensitive documents in the private sector and at least partially deface themselves if photocopied.

I believe Maryland birth certificates have a mark that appears if they have been run through a photocopier. On both the copy and the original after it has been photocopied.

I was thinking about that very thing the other day...I wonder if the paper or maybe the classification stamps
have a photo chemical in it that changes color if it's exposed to certain wavelengths of light like a photocopier or flash of camera or IR from an illumination source?  That would clearly show attempts to copy documents..

I know I'm showing my age here, but every paper check uses this technology too. Photocopied checks have "VOID" or something show up.

What are you all talking about? Trump knows tech better than just about anyone. He's a genius at the cyber.

"Look at the mess that we're in. Look at the mess that we're in. As far as the cyber, I agree to parts of what Secretary Clinton said, we should be better than anybody else, and perhaps we're not. I don't know if we know it was Russia who broke into the DNC.
She's saying Russia, Russia, Russia. Maybe it was. It could also be China, it could be someone sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds. You don't know who broke into DNC, but what did we learn? We learn that Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of by your people. By Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Look what happened to her. But Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of. Now, whether that was Russia, whether that was China, whether it was another country, we don't know, because the truth is, under President Obama we've lost control of things that we used to have control over. We came in with an internet, we came up with the internet.
And I think Secretary Clinton and myself would agree very much, when you look at what ISIS is doing with the internet, they're beating us at our own game. ISIS. So we have to get very, very tough on cyber and cyber warfare. It is a, it is a huge problem. I have a son.
He's 10 years old. He has computers. He is so good with these computers, it's unbelievable. The security aspect of cyber is very, very tough. And maybe it's hardly do-able. But I will say, we are not doing the job we should be doing, but that's true throughout our whole governmental society. We have so many things that we have to do better, Lester and certainly cyber is one of them."
