Fun fact: RHCP we're created by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is, in fact, a time traveling T-800 that went back to the past to build new models of himself that would create music that encourages people to keep moving to California so that Skynet would be built.

So I gotta ask:

Is there a band or an artist that one can publicly admit to liking on Fark without being exposed to massive amounts of derision?

Besides Weird Al that is.

Because it seems like every single band in the history of music gets shiat talked here either in the comments or in the headline.

Besides Weird Al that is.

Just curious.

I'm amazed by Fleas ability to just get uglier and uglier as he ages, not an "eww gross" kinda ugly either, but the "ugliest dog in America" kinda ugly, where it's almost endearing.

It WAS a lot easier to like them in bars and clubs for $10. I'm not sure why folks ignore that point about bands. Just because I had fun at your bar gig doesn't mean I'm going to follow you to arenas or stadiums for hundreds of dollars more. Unless you're bringing a 1977 level Pink Floyd show or whatever.

It's sorta cheating, but you could also fly under the criticism radar by saying you like a specific artist that no one has heard of.

But God help you if you specifically mention them being obscure or even don't name them and just say they're obscure. Then you've just attached a sign to your back that says "Kick me, I'm a hipster."

Does the new song include a list of cities as a verse?

People who listen to obscure music are not hipsters.

People who only listen to what Pitchfork, NPR, and Anthony Fantano tell them to are hipsters.

I am 100% a music hipster though. In elementary school I used to skip lunch so I could buy a record every Friday with my hoarded lunch money.

I liked them until BSSM came out. I even still like that album. But like most bands, their first "big" album fully backed by the studio is their last good one. Metallica and Motley Crue suffered from this. The Black Album was cool, but after that, Metallica got boring. I liked Theater of Pain, but Motley Crue's first two albums were awesome, everything else was pretty cool, but not spectacular.

Same thing here. BSSM was a great album, but they figured out that they could make poppy quasi-punk that was radio friendly and sell a lot more albums.

Their weird funky sound was fun with I was 12. Now that I'm 37 it just seems silly. Kind of like how angsty nu metal really made sense when I was 16. But now seems silly. So I'm not judging the Chili Peppers. I think it's me not them.

I had Freaky and UMFPP pretty much when they were released. When Mothers came out I thought, this is a cool shift, and when BSSM came out, and all of a sudden everyone was into this new band, I was like, yeah...this band is cool.

But I have very little use for anything they've done since.

I guess that makes me like some kind of a Grandpa Hipster?

First, the California joke is always spot on.

Second, I guess I don't get the hate for RHCP. They had some fun, innovative music when they were in their beginnings with Hillel Slovak on guitar. After he passed, they could do way, way worse than picking up John Frusciante (he's better). But just like tons of bands, they evolve into music styles that kind of betrays what you liked about them in the first place. That or they get repetitive and boring. That's what I think of RHCP.
