Canada trying hard to shed its image of being a pleasant, sensible nation, eh? Guys, the LAPD is not a role model.

Definitely a knee-jerk, overreaction to the NS shooting but this dude definitely fit the profile. A knock on the door and a private conversation would have resolved it though.

An interesting quirk of Canadian gun law:

If you own a pistol and claim it's part of a collection, the police may enter your home at any time without a warrant.

Not kidding.

As you might imagine, most people don't declare collections here. I mean, you're allowed to own as many pistols as you like if you have the right license, and no-one's allowed to bust into your place.

Unless you say it's a collection. Then it's no-knock, no warrant searches for you.

Our gun laws are kinda farky.

My Uncle, who was in the US Secret Service, was on protective details for Carter through Reagan, then they kind of retired him to administrative work.  He got us some t shirts.  Cheap looking light green things, I think they were for agents using their gym or something, and not sold at the gift shop.

A year later, we're sailing up the Maine coast.  We see a small navy ship hanging about.  A small Cigarette type boat zooms out of Kennebunkport harbor, with a small fleet of boats chasing after it.   Oh, it must be George Bush, and a bunch of the press photographers hiring local boats.

We pull into the harbor, into the slip where we had a reservation for an overnight stay.  There are two agents at the end of the dock, asking "What's all this then!?"  I happened to be wearing my secret service t shirt that day, and we were apparently at the same dock that Bush used.  No guns were drawn, and once they heard my Uncle's name, it was all good.

I have a similar story, minus the uncle and with a "Calgary Fire Department" T shirt. I wasn't even in Calgary. There was a bridge and an MVA, I'll leave it at that.

I started being more careful about where I wore work swag after that day.

/did my high-angle training with guys from Calgary's Hall 1

That's pretty messed up. Canadian police may not be as bad as our US neighbors, but they are hardly the paragon of public service they are supposed to be.

And those swat guys look like they were dressed like infantry, in bloody green. Seriously, there is no reason for cops to play army. It is everything the police should NOT be.

When they smash your door over a highly dubious no knock warrant over a non violent case the least they could bloody do is fix it.

Just a bunch of thugs having a fun day raiding the house of some sad 60 year old nerd they decided to pick on cause he was an easy target at the time.

ACAB.

Honestly? The SWAT team should be the absolute last resort and only utilized in a case where there is an immediate, direct threat.

I think y'all are looking at this the wrong way. This guy also collected Star Trek memorabilia. He's lucky that Daleks and Imperial Stormtoopers didn't bust down his door and shoot him right in the Horcruxes.

Uh, we don't have oil shale up here*, it's tar sands. Keep your oil-bearing countries straight :P

*at least not enough so anyone cares, compared to all the other oil up here.

Brendan Fraser might want to consult with his attorney.

There was a thread earlier this week that said that 99% of serial killers were heavily into Star Trek.

And while his criminal charge was dropped, his legal ordeal isn't over. Police now want to take away his gun licence. A provincial firearms officer wrote to Thwing that "your collection of RCMP memorabilia has gone past the collector stage and clearly has turned to an obsession.... Your obsession with the RCMP and emulating their uniform in your daily fashion choices causes me great concern."

Oh brother.

Now, you may have a point, but let's consider the last mass shooting in Canada.

I mean, for us, those are once in a few years incidents, so that one is still fresh. Dude had a serious RCMP fetish, and then over a dozen people got shot. We may have a sore spot about RCMP cosplay, especially since you don't really see fanbois in serge at community events, you know?

So many policing problems can be solved by sending one or two well-trained people around to asses the situation, but that's not macho or something.

Halloween must suck in Canada.  Imagine all those little kids dressed up as cops, firemen and Drs getting arrested.
That's why my kids dress as pimps and hoes, the real role model for kids and they are not afraid if you wear their uniforms in public.

Back as a kid on the farm, we had a page from MAD (Don Martin, of course) tacked up in the milk house.  Can't find it, or I'd post it.

A cow, standing in a pasture, eating grass.  All of a sudden, one it's teats jerks, with a "FIDIP" sound effect.

Cow is startled, goes back to eating.  A second later, it happens again - "FI-DIP!".

Again startled, goes back to eating.  And it happens again - "FI-DIP!  FI-DIP!"

Close in on the area - a Spider, with a sweater, an athletic head guard, sneakers, and boxing gloves, is using that teat as a punching bag - "FI-DIP!  FI-DIP!  MAP MAP!!"
