Never invest your own money.

Especially when it's more than you can explain having with normal methods of income.

This isn't an "Oh no, anyway" situation.
This is an "Oh yes, that's farking hilarious" situation.

Fiscal conservatives are just looking for a classy way to hate on poor people.  They'll gladly write checks to Foxconn all day.

Should've spent some money trimming that giant ass-bush.

The "fiscal conservative" never existed.  it was always about denying social services to Americans by the rich.

This is the problem with today's political structure. It takes so much money you have to be an insanely wealth douche or indebt yourself to insanely wealthy douches.

Well, that should just give him more motivation to jump on the grifter circuit until his image is sufficiently rehabilitated for him to make another go at congress.

If he fails on the grifter circuit, he can always fall on one of the knives he has taped to his wheelchair.

Let's see... $174,000 * 4 is $696,000. Subtract $556,000 and that's $140,000. Over 4 years, that's $35,000 annually.

I can't think of any reason why someone would want to be a public servant for $35k, but that's how the math works. Wonder what I'm missing here?

Clearly he's so worried about the future of the country that he's willing to spend his own money to secure his position in influencing our direction.

HA.  No.  It was an investment - he knows the grift opportunities he'd have as a congresscritter would repay that personal loan many times over.

What has he been doing anyhow?  Does he even show up to Congress anymore?  Being the sophisticated politico that I am, I get most of my US political news through what is posted here.  He certainly hasn't made any major headlines, but is he doing anything at all? The article only mentioned him making like one or two required filings, and it's not like he went to Congress to actually accomplish anything he could be working on in his closing months.

From January 2015 to August 2016, Cawthorn worked as a staff assistant in Representative Mark Meadows's district office. He told the Asheville Citizen-Times he worked there "full-time", but it was a part-time role.
Cawthorn is the owner and CEO of SPQR Holdings, LLC, a real estate investment firm in Hendersonville. The firm was started in August 2019 and reported no income; Cawthorn is its sole employee.[11] As of August 2020, the company had been involved in only one real estate transaction, purchasing a 6-acre property for $20,000, in a foreclosure auction.

where the hell did he get his money?

That dude is nuts.

By all accounts, he was a raging narcissistic lunatic *before* the accident. And, well, those kinds of people don't deal well with suddenly being handicapped. He has gone completely over the edge, I think.

I expect that in a few years (or maybe months), once nobody knows or cares who he is anymore, he's going to go out in a blaze. Coke-fueled homicide involving a male prostitute, followed by a standoff with SWAT and then he'll kill himself.

He did spend quite a bit at the cigar shop according to the article. These guys use campaign funds like personal credit cards.
