Martin Mull is one of those guys who you go "Martin Mull?  I remember him!  Damn, I miss him.  He died, right?" then you feel like shiat for forgetting him and  thinking he died as you remember all the good stuff he put out.

Saw Marty at the Troub opening for Arlo Guthrie. He was touring in support of the LP Martin Mull and His Fabulous Furniture (which was onstage)
Got to hear such gems as Margie The Midget and Amputee Boogie.

" I know Kris and Rita, and Marty Mull are meeting at the Troubadour,
Get it on with The Joy Of Cooking, as the crowd calls out for more "

That line was improvised by Martin.

"For instance, we have Paul Rodriguez tapping the wellspring of comedy by making fun of one's own people, making him the envy of every non-Mexican comic. I wish I could get away with telling jokes like...how does a Mexican know he's hungry? His ass stops burning. But that's your territory, Paul, I won't step in it."

1982 working at the Diamond supermarket. Over next to one of the checkout lanes was a rack full of discounted cassettes, including his album Near Perfect/Perfect.

Laughed my 16-year old ass off and made the mistake of letting my mother listen. She did not care for "I've Been an Asshole Over You" which, for some reason, isn't on the track listing anymore.

He was Steve Martin before Steve Martin was Steve Martin.

Period.

And now I find that the track is called "It's All Behind Me Now"

Funny how listening to it again after all these years, I remember all the beats and most of the bits.

Martin Mull was one of those guys who was seemingly everywhere in TV in the 70s and early 80s. His own series, variety shows, game shows, guest appearances, you name it.
And then, like, nothing.
You still see Fred Willard around every so often, but I don't think I've seen Martin since somewhere in the 90s.
He's probably been a guest star here and there, but it's certainly not been on my radar.

First time I saw him was Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Been a fan ever since.
