You pay for art.

Phantasy Star II was an obscene $99.99 when it came out in 1990. Sega inserted a (now holy grail ephemera) card thanking them for buying it, because the game cost more to develop than the System-16/MD/Genesis hardware.

Adjusted, its development costs were north of $5,000,000. It was the most expensive game ever made at that point.

/Superceded by (in order): FF6/3, PhStarIV, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Daikatana, FF7, Shenmue.

It probably won't see a discount till the holidays, so just buy it.

I was totally new to Souls/From-Software games and got 230 hours out of my first playthrough.

It is a gorgeous looking game. I mainly die due to my own impatience; however I did figure out that 'enemies' can be easily taken out using a bow and arrows...they will only deviate from their pattern to a certain point and will not advance any further towards you. Only works above ground....

Do yourself a favor and skip Dark Souls 1&2.  The combat is incredibly sluggish compared to ER.  Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 are much faster and geared towards aggressive gameplay.

208 hours for me, and same - it was my first From Software game. I was reluctant to try it, but Farkers convinced me. Glad they did, I had a really good time with it. It's a really good game.

It is difficult, but there's also a lot of leeway in how you play which you can determine how difficult it really is for you. I spent a lot of time exploring, grinding, and leveling before I bothered trying any real bosses to speak of or game progression, and that bent the difficulty curve a lot.

First time here too, and feel the same as the others above. Gorgeous and fun game, especially on the exploration side. I will say the difficulty spikes can be insane. To the point where you're in an area where you may be bulldozing through or have a fair challenge just to run in to a place/boss that will completely wreck you beyond hope. But, you grind, lvl up, come back and spank em. I only wish that there were a journal or ability to tie notes to markers on the map so I could remember what the hell I put it there for or as quest reminders, instead I keep a notepad near by.

Sekiro is also incredible and you get to fly around like a ninja on your way to getting murdered by the next impossible boss.

I never buy games at full price.  Patience saves me soooo much money.

The lack of a quest journal was my biggest complaint - and I stand by it. I ended up keeping a second screen open at all times to check on quests and keep track of them.

Yeah the whole "I know I am supposed to get some golden needle but I can't remember where it is or who I was supposed to give it to...." blows.

Sekiro is awesome but also the only modern Fromsoft game that I've fully abandoned. I did better with it when playing at 60fps vs 30 but goddamn. Just no margin for any error in there. Got past Genichiro and decided that was enough for me.

Didn't need to be open world, but was a pleasant surprise after the steaming pile of shiat that was Sekiro.

The best part of ER is hearing people whine about quest logs as if quests are really anything other than flavor text in this game.  But hey, some people need Ubisoft hand holding!

LMAO, god that would've been terrible.

Was my first From game as well and was the first game in a long time that really captured this old, jaded gamer's attention. Going back to play the earlier games now.

I mean, I got shiat to do. It's nice that some people are real into journaling and such, but I'm just not going to remember what some NPC told me a week ago on one of the half a dozen questlines that might be relevant to my character at that moment - doubly so since half the time even following the dialogue closely might not help that much.

If the "get gud" goons hate it so much, by all means let them turn it off. For the rest of us it's a pain in the ass of a mostly otherwise great game.

Naw, I did that power grind then and stomped the rest of the game.

It's the modding for this game? That doesn't sound that hard to add in honestly.

I too prefer quest markers, map pins, quest logs, etc.

I don't need Ubisoft or MMO level UI, but it's a game, but something I want to focus so hard on in a casual playthrough between play gaps.

I was talking sub-$30 pricing.  I got such a wonderful backlog of games thanks to bundles that there is no new game I need to jump into.  I love FromSoft Games (well, the slower ones) but I'll enjoy the game so much more years down the line than if I jumped on it now.  The games I already started don't deserve to be bumped into a hiatus status that may turn into indefinite abandonment since, you know, I already paid for them and installed them.

No, there's no mod for it yet. I think it's not quite so straightforward to mod that in. Someone made a quest tracker app, so you can check off the various stages of a quest as you go along, but that lives on your phone. I also made a lot of use of an excellent online map, which I think also has some sort of checklist functionality so you can keep track of stuff if you create an account on the site. https://mapgenie.io/elden-ring/maps/the-lands-between

The good news is that the map markers for the in game map are pretty good, you can drop a number of them, and the pins you drop on the map make a little skybeam in the physical world for you to find the location you pinned easier.
