Some need constant noise in order to drown out the yawning vortex that is their own thoughts. That's why you get certain people that you can't shut up even with a ballgag and 3 rolls of duct tape.

As a pedestrian and occasional cyclist, I wouldn't mind a little more noise from electric vehicles. Not a stupid amount like a cat deleted Dodge 3500, but at least enough to know it's coming up behind me.

Between the attention whores and people who hate change (think of the blind children!), I can't have one got dam moment of silence.

Didn't the NHTSA just ban all of these dumb electric sounds?

Can the running engine sound be changed to - I don't know - the flatulent aftermath of a Taco Bell value meal?

It's a way to project "look at me, I'm special" but they're just a narcissist with a noisy car.

No, Uncle has decided your KILLER ROBOT vehicle has to make nice noises only.

Or, perhaps you should practice maintaining situational awareness.

The less-evolved male members of humans LOVE noisy machines like cars with no mufflers, Harleys, chainsaws and lawn mowers because it makes 'em feel like REAL MEN.

I swear to god this was the plot of a Kevin James movie.

Come to think of it, the majority of roadway noise I hear nowadays is from tires slapping against pavement, and EVs and hybrids aren't exactly common around me. Sure, there's like one jackass on a Harley every now and then, or an old Ford begging for death, but I'm getting the feeling some of these noise-added EVs will wind up being louder than a recent non-EV.

Especially these, but I'm thinking like anything that has a speaker to make bonus noise at all.

It's a rare recording of Lee Iococca going "Vrrrrrooooom vrroooooooom. Honk. Screeeeeee!"

Perhaps with a decent breeze rustling the leaves outside, you can't hear a Tesla coming up until it's right next to you.  Perhaps half of all drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, bikers, etc are all idiots, and while I trust myself, I always look both ways before crossing a one-way street.

My favorite pedestrian/situational awareness story (which I've told here before, but it's funny enough to warrant a retelling):

When we lived in Philly, I was on my way to meet my wife for lunch and was at a corner, waiting for the light to change so I could cross.  A woman, staring intently at her phone, weaved her way through the waiting pedestrians, walked into the road, and was hit by a delivery truck.  I was the only one who laughed out loud.

Most traffic noise comes from tires on pavement not engines

I see loud trucks and cars... and I think, geez, that muscle car growl (or ricer revving and farting) is no longer the symbol of a powerful car. Electrics beat all ICE cars, hands down, when it comes to power. I hear all that noise and think "how pathetic" and "Another 'Alpha Male' who is just an asshole that never matured past 12 years old"

Even in the ICE world, loud trucks mean nothing. I regularly see work trucks in m town that have no noise issues, hauling much more than their noisy brethren.

The idiot down the road just tore by with the sound of a moist, incomplete fart, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Anytime I hear a loud truck now I think it has a mechanical defect.

5000-9000lb vehicles shouldn't make sounds.
