NYC to save money lowered the temp of the hot water supply to some of the public housing units and there was a serious outbreak.  They found an. "expert" to say all these cases spread all over the place were from a cooling tower as the quietly raised the hot water supply temp.

Institutional showers are a grrr source.  Water fountains where condensate can sit in a pan near the compressor are good because they are air cooled and you stick your face in them.

Your standard condensate off an ac unit might have it but it's a terrible delivery source because you have to breathe it.

It's all over the place but usually in such a low level it's harmless

First line of article mentions pool and spa. Lots of suspects, but I would hope they've figured out the source by now.

Ironically, this is a high end hotel in Appleti Cupertino, which is close to me. Now I know to take my ho to the dive Motel 6 on First street instead. Way cleaner for 1/3 the price.

There's at least seven of the things in the Bay Area. The article says "Aloft Cupertino in San Jose" which fits none of them.  There's "Aloft Cupertino" on DeAnza, and there's "Aloft San Jose Cupertino" on Moorpark. Whatever.

healthcare premises have to be really careful about legionnaires.  from my limited understanding, it incubates in static, tepid water.  so there's a protocol in hospitals... any tap (faucet to you lot) that isn't frequently used, has to be run, hot, on a regular basis, as a precautionary measure.

but it still happens, there was a GP surgery near us that had to close for ages because they had an outbreak of legionnaires.

A cooling tower on top of a Quebec City hotel was linked to a deadly outbreak in 2012. Link

My dad had legionnaire's back in 1992, contracted while he was on a business trip in Europe. He was flown back home and immediately admitted to hospital.  When he asked the doctor what his chances of survival were, the doctor said he hadn't had a patient survive yet. He spent 6 weeks in hospital, lost 40 lbs, and heart function was as low as 10%. His heart function only got back to 55%, contributing to his fatal heart attack 13 years later (he had other factors too...).

I believe that the original mass outbreak at the American Legion convention in 1976 was traced back to the HVAC system.

It's not named for the cool French Foreign Legion, it's for the dorky American Legion.
