I felt for years that our funds would have been better spent and in much smaller amounts, if we had just had regular flights of women and children out of Afghanistan, and Iraq.  Just land a jumbo jet, throw open the doors, and as soon as the seats were filled, take off and land another one.  I feel the same way about Haiti, and every time they have a hurricane or earthquake.  Just evacuate everyone and resettle them in America.  Hell of a lot cheaper  But the defense contractors make might lose a dollar or two, so nope can't help 'em.

I understand why she would want to go back to Saudi Arabia for a visit. It's her home. I know what homesickness is like. Any time you're unhappy while abroad, those thoughts creep in about how much happier you would be if you were home. It's perfectly normal and understandable.

However. If you're a Saudi woman and you're fortunate enough to find yourself in the UK, stay there. Don't give up having legally protected human rights, even temporarily.

He had just got back from a 6 month contract gig in Saudi Arabia as a mechanical systems engineer, oil related, of course. On his third night there, a few of the guys he was working with took him out. After dinner they took him to a "show". It was a beheading. They told him that he needed to "behave" while he was there because that was how they treated people who misbehaved. He was terrified for 6 months, never spoke about anything that wasn't work related. He was shaking like a motherfarker by the time he was done telling the story.

That story, and his details of it, scared the living shiat out of me. Those people must be absolutely barbaric. Full stop. I can't believe that poor woman went back after having lived abroad for so long. I wonder WTF she was thinking.

People don't really think what they do online has any consequences. For whatever reason they assume no one is watching, even if it's been proven time and again to not be the case. Also when people go abroad they assume whatever they do there stays there.

If you are a citizen of an oppressive regime, only use anonymous accounts when criticizing them, don't go through customs with that phone and in general, cover your tracks.

A friend of mine's father, a Saudi citizen,  had to visit SA a few years ago. Something about renewing it or some requirement. We all held our breath a bit while he was gone. He's not the vocal type, and he came back okay but we were all worried.

Saudis are grunting f*cking savages who only get a seat at the 21st Century Table because of oil. If not for that they'd still be squatting over their dusty sandals in filthy caves, eating camels, and cutting each other's heads off over "honor" bullsh*t, and we'd ALL be better off.

Choosing to stay someplace where you're a third class citizen is a lot like buggery. If you're not complaining about it or trying to leave after 5 minutes it can be safely assumed you like it.

Same. Had a friend who went for work (legal officer for US entity with operations in SA), and also was taken to such a show (in a public square no less). Seems like this is a big "thing" for them over there. I love to travel. Would go almost anywhere to see something new. Have no interest in ever visiting that dusty backward shthole.

It wasn't "right wingers" who knee-walked over to them recently to beg them to increase their oil output. Maybe if we were producing more of our own we wouldn't have to be quite so accommodating to these assholes.

I could probably freak out the locals. I'm a bladesmith, I'd want to talk to the headsman about the swords he uses, what type of edge geometry is used, does he use any modern blades or only antiques, and if the Persian crucible steel blades are still considered superior.

This isn't nearly as difficult as it might have once been. You can pay some kid to work off a list of information and turn in social media accounts for anyone who has left the country, especially younger people who have left to attend school or professionals working abroad. Pay them by the account, so they have incentive to work.

Then you pay another group of Laura Ingram wannabes to monitor their posts and flag anything suspicious or "subversive". If everyone is paid by the account, you might only need a dozen people to just sit around all day and watch this stuff roll in. Maybe add a few English specialists.

Along with management and someone to handle the software needed, you can easily have a social media surveillance apparatus which is under 20 people,

This is a relatively lazy job even in Saudi Arabia where few people seem to really want to work very hard, and wouldn't even take up an entire floor of a small office building.
