I guess my "I'm going to buy some salad greens tonight" press release didn't have the media frenzy traction I was shooting for.

English footie fans were apoplectic when American Malcolm Glazer took control of Man U, but seemed to have no problem with a Russian oligarch owning Chelsea or the Saudi Government owning Newcastle.

The5thElement: the Saudi Government owning Newcastle.

There have been massive protests against the Saudi ownership group of Newcastle but everyone likes money too much to care.

Roman wasn't an issue at all until Putin let greed take over. People's misgivings over the Saudis were and are well-founded, but a lot of people who are afraid of the current Liverpool/City duopoly breaking (ie those who benefit from it) piled in on that and it gave free ammo for people to welcome anything that changes the status quo. Even if that change comes from a place with ulterior motives.

I'm sure that with all the cash flowing in and will be winning more matches probably doesn't hurt either. They can certainly afford better players now.

I had no idea that protests were going on over the Newcastle ownership issue. When they bought out the ream, it barely got a mention on the networks that show EPL here.

And if Meg Markle taught us anything, they aren't going to be too fond of an African-America owning one of their football teams.

Did anyone tell the Glazers about this?

The biggest issue most Europeans have with American owners is that American owners tend to treat the clubs like businesses and want to make a profit before all else. Most clubs in Europe are really local clubs that weren't started as businesses they were started as local entities to help locals from one town talk trash to locals from the next town over, in some cases from one neighborhood to another. As such the fans of that club don't care if the club makes money they only care if the club wins. That is why they generally want a local businessman to own the club or for it to be fan owned. That way everyone involved wants to win trophies more than make money.

The belief is that American owners don't care about trophies, they only care about money. That is the biggest difference. Russian oligarchs and oil rich royal families have the same mindset as the local fans, they want to win trophies so they can brag to their friends that their team won a trophy. Generally American owners would rather make money every year and never win a trophy as opposed to win a trophy and lose money. Hence there is a major divide between the goals of the fans and the ownership.

American sports owners try to be competitive enough to keep the fans interested enough in the team, make the occasional championship run, and make money hand over fist every year. Europeans are delusional if they believe the owners aren't in it for the money, at least in the top flight leagues. If they aren't in it for the money, then it's for the money laundering.

Based on the fact that Elon Musk wants to buy it, I can conclude the following:

1) The team has never made money, and has no clear path to financial viability
2) Elon does not know that and won't until he googles the team 60 minutes after he signs the contract
3) He will then try to claim shenanigans to get out of it
4) The team gets a windfall from the penalty Elon pays when he breaks the contract

This. Case in point is that Abramovich was happy to through millions away in his pursuit of the Champion's League. He blew over £100 million just on compensation for sacking managers.

Had a real effect on the stock price. Somebody somewhere made a lot, and somebody somewhere lost a lot. "Ha ha, j/k" and millions of dollars just evaporated into the air. Sports bookies and bettors have more measured restraint than "investors."

How much stock did he have in it prior to the announcement? Wouldn't be the first time he manipulated stock prices to make money.
