Yeah. You don't need to be an A-Lister to turn that down. You just need to have a tiny amount of dignity and enough money to afford that dignity.

Snapper Carr: Gene turned down money?

I'm shocked.

I have a feeling that this show would take up way too much of his time with all the practicing.  That takes away from time that Gene is thinking up ways to market Kiss branded garbage for the rubes.

It's not a good fit for the KISS brand and he knows it.

His marketing and monetization of KISS is relentless.
It is also effective and I would do the same if I could.

If fan bois would pay $50 for an action figure of me I'd sure as fark make and sell them.

"Thank you @officialdwts Dancing With the Stars for the offer to be on the show," he wrote in the tweet. "Respectfully passing. Wouldn't be fair to the other contestants. I won the Twist contest back in the Stone Age."

Say what you will about Simmons (and there's plenty that can be said), but that's a funny response, and also an uncharacteristically self-depreciating admission that he's a little old for the show. His speed would be closer to Hip-Breaking With the Stars.

Like them or not KISS was YUGE at their peak.
Unbelievably huge. (Literally unbelievable, by the way)

Between 1976 and 1978, Kiss earned $17.7 million from record royalties and music publishing. (over $86M adjusted for inflation to 2022)    A 1977 Gallup poll named Kiss the most popular band in America.

They were inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2013.

I'm not saying you (or anyone) should like their music or them as people, but they were A-Listers.

Back in their prime, putting Gene Simmons' name on a poster was probably a huge boost for a concert. That's A-list status as a musician. You can be A-list without being a Beyonce-level superstar.

As an actor, Simmons was never more than a B or C-lister, but he still had enough name recognition that you couldn't call him a D-lister in movies either. Heck, even now his name would carry more value in a cast list than Kevin Sorbo's.

I mean, I'm possibly too tough a grader. A list is a short list for me, not even about the band but the person, guys like Michael Jackson or Paul McCartney, I'd even be hesitant to put a Ringo on that list (though by definition as a Beatle he is).

Then again it's Gene, not Ace, so maybe. He's the face of the band with or without makeup.

Yeah. You don't need to be an A-Lister to turn that down. You just need to have a tiny amount of dignity and enough money to afford that dignity.

Let's talk about Gene Simmons and all the "dignity" that his money affords him.

Five years ago he was offering the Gene Simmons Vault Experience where for $50,000 he'd personally deliver his compilation CD package to your home. That's right, for less than the cost of a used Corvette, this guy worth over $400 million would come to your house to deliver his 10 CD box set to you.

I think money doesn't really factor into the DWTS rejection.

In one case he is being paid money to visit with an adoring fan who is willing to pay $50K just to have a visit. That is ego orgy. It provides the adoration he craves.

The other will result him him dancing awkwardly and probably being mocked for it.

Not the same thing at all.

The real question is : how many people paid for this?
If it's more than 0, I'd call this a savvy business move in a country where this is about the price of an appendectomy.

A-list isn't a measure of talent, just a rating of how much audience-pull someone has. If your name alone is enough to attract a crowd, which Gene's probably did back in the day, then he was an A-lister. Hell, for a brief embarrassing time, even Ashlee Simpson was an A-lister. It's not that exclusive a club.

I don't know what you call "defending them." They did a disco-sounding song or two because that was the fashion at the time. They're a manufactured commercial pop-rock band. They're no more a disco band than they are a rock and roll band.
