and have aged very poorly in the 25 years since

F*ck you. It's a goddamn video game that was expressly made to be the 'Mo' Fun League' and incorporate what you couldn't do on a field. Aging poorly is shiat that makes you cringe like misogyny or homophobia. Saying "Hey, what if there weren't rules about late hits/cheap shots/aggression/etc and instead it was just fun on the field?" is not a concept that ages poorly. Add in the fact that pretty much the only people who would be buying this are 35+ guys, I don't think anyone's expecting kids to emulate this in playgrounds.

"I won't say that you won't notice [the changes], but I will say that you're still having a lot of fun, and it's almost not affecting the gameplay. All the original plays are in there."

Next you'll pull out the special moves in Mega Man Soccer because they usually ended with the goalkeeper getting brutally destroyed.

shiat, remember when we had sports games where you could actually have fun rather than "realism"?

Granted, the NFL is also the reason Madden doesn't have an option to create your own team and create your own uniforms.  It's to protect the brand and make sure some berm recolors the Steelers in pink or rename the Patriots as the Nancies.

...which is essentially what I would do in situations like those.

It's no coincidence that some of the best football games were the Blitz: The League games, the ones they made after losing the NFL license to the Madden exclusivity deal.  Losing the license let them go hard on the darker side of the sport.  Juice your players, send champagne and hookers to the opposing team's hotel rooms the night before the game, deliberately go for injuries, make a team from Cleveland called the Steamers...  A game filled with all the wild-but-real crap they could never have gotten away with in a licensed title.

Fun fact, I had that game and I could NEVER understand why I had to always pick a new pitcher.

I grew up only ever listening to Jays Games before they had interleague play.

Great game tho'.

Oh boy!  It has all the original plays?

No one gives a fark about the plays, you jackwagon.  We played Blitz for the over-the-top action and the gratuitous, almost looney tunes-level violence.  That would be like adapting NBA Jam but removing the dunking from beyond the 3 point line and the shattered back boards.  It might still be fun to play but you've removed the best part of the game, and anyone that's played the game before will know what they're missing and it will inevitably taint their experience.  So you've just alienated like 95% of your market base.

I get why the NFL wants to downplay the violence, because it's not a great look for them now to have their brand attached to something violent.  But honestly if you can't do the game right, for whatever reason, then you probably shouldn't do it at all.

I loved that game!
Once you got the controls down, it became fairly deep and strategic for a title of that era.
Was a total blast head to head.

I loved Blitz so much. My buddies and I were ruthless. Wide Reciever blowing up your team? Blow up his kneecap.

Blew up my Wide Recievers knee? Paging Dr. Chao. Dr. David Chao to the 30 yard line, we need some of your happy juice to get a player back in the game. So dirty and ironically in a lot of ways, one of the most realistically accurate depictions of the NFL.

CSB:  I was once winning an NFL Blitz game against the computer.  3-point lead, computer had the ball, 4th and long, like 5 seconds left.  I get a sack, the QB fumbles and the ball rolls and rolls and rolls to the computer's own 20.  An offensive lineman gets next to the ball, picks it up, turns and throws it 80 yards to the end zone to a wide open WR.

It rolled backwards, but for Blitz, probably didn't matter.

My friend...

...LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ALL-PRO FOOTBALL 2007 ON PC...

/Jedekai (duh, There's Only One). Billings Dragons. Rolled over Manager Mode (2,499 games).
//...W-L is well over 90% in my favor. I've even been promostreamed winning a game (barely) with all new players against only Legends of The Gridiron.
///...Oh. God. That achievement on X360/PS3 has to be virtually impossible; by the time there was the 2MW, I had exhausted every player. My KICKER WAS PLAYING QB! I was handing off that thing to Fatty McRib (haha im 14 and thats funny), a 7'0" 500 lb. Linebacker who suffered from progeria, as he moved with the speed of a bloated corpse encased in gelatin to a 0.01 yd. gain. I had maybe a 20th of a second to hand it off.
