I have layered/compressed bamboo flooring.  Easier to install than hardwood, looks nifty, and is superhard.  I could definitely see that as structural material.

I hate bamboo. The asshole who owned my house before me planted bamboo and I've been in a war with it for 13 years.

We have been looking into putting bamboo along the back fence, but the non-spreading kind is crazy expensive.

I have heard great things about it. I wish you the best.

But I am reminded of an odd case among my many colorful not-so-close relatives. Bamboo is said to symbolize good luck in Japanese culture, and in Chinese culture, it represents honesty, integrity, modesty and loyalty. This relative was leading a more or less normal life and then started down a long downward spiral involving drug use, mental illness, divorce, bankruptcy, sexual ambiguity and promiscuity, estrangement, homelessness, and eventually numerous health problems and suicide.

The catalyst had been the installation of bamboo flooring. No kidding. It was so expensive for this person, living as a young couple with a small child, that it touched off numerous financial problems and a chaotic lifestyle that spun spectacularly out of control. The flooring was so nice that they had to have it. They took enormous risks to get it and everything just blew up. They lost the house and everything else. I heard about it after the fact. It is such a bizarre story.

It has nothing to do with the flooring, but it had everything to do with the flooring. I guess it could have been anything, but it wasn't. Sorry to be a downer about it. I am struck by the irony and the "fate" of it all.

Totally on the other hand, obviously it is nice enough and valued enough by people that they have just got to have it. Which is nice.
