Listen to those lyrics!  It's all about love, and longing.

Yes, and hobbits too.

It's not Jock Rock!

Isn't "Manowar" the "Steel Panther" of "D&D nerd metal"?

Manowar still holds a Guinness record for something like the loudest chord ever played.

My D&D character is a bard who only knows classic rock & hair metal songs, so this post is relevant to my interests. She even has an electric guitar as her musical instrument. I gave her the Magic Initiate feat, too, so she can cast cleric spells. Now she has Spiritual Guardians: a protective cloud of angry Eddie Van Halens wielding "axes".

Here's some obscurica....

There are so many reasons to love this comment.

To tell the truth, if I had those abs and that hair, I'd parade around in a loincloth too.

I still say they were the Steel Panther of their genre, they just weren't in on the joke.

It's easy to make fun of Manowar but guitarist Ross The Boss is one of the best rock players alive.  He was also the lead guitarist in The Dictators, the band most responsible for inspiring The Ramones.

I think Blind Guardian is the epitome of nerd metal. Manowar just embraced the cheese.

Eh, sorta.

They look straight up stupid in a lot of early photos. Their music, though, is half epic fantasy metal and fake goofy "I love heavy metal" anthems. Or most of the time wanna be anthems.

I would have picked Defender as the best example of their epic work, or possibly Armageddon (Deaths Angel) or Secret of Steel.

Wanted to also toss Blind Guardian into the argument. Good stuff.

best 80s US metal bands were Manilla Road, Sanctuary, and Brocas Helm

A lot of the heavy metal of the 1970's was strangely literary.  That doesn't really surprise me.  When I was a kid, all the metal heads had grungy paperbacks of Conan the Barbarian, Elric of Melnibone, HP Lovecraft etc, hanging out of the back pocket of their motor oil stained jeans.
