(ESPN)   Many illegal contact flags were thrown in preseason Week 1. "Why should I have to improve my defensive technique? LET ME HOLD THE WR. UNFAIR." Can we get a BooFarkingHoo tag already   (espn.com) divider line

Those flags seem to benefit Tom Brady a lot more than Cam Newton.

It's a point of emphasis.

To be fair, it really sucks playing defense now as compared to years past. Can't grab a guy, can't impede him in any way, can't hit too hard, and they're often allowed to push off of you. So you're expected to shadow someone without making contact for several seconds; you have to keep your eyes on them to know where they are, and if a pass is short, you have to magically know that before the WR suddenly jumps backwards into you without being able to look at it.

And then you don't even get the satisfaction of seeing your safety crush him if he goes over the middle.

WRs have nothing to fear and can draw penalties at any time they don't get a catch. It's as silly as playing offensive line. "Yeah, sure I'm gonna keep Aaron Donald blocked AND look out for a LB or blitzing safety and I'm gonna do it without grabbing anything."

Can they still make contact within 5 yards of scrimmage? If so knock 'em on their asses. That'll throw off their timing

I hope the major sports networks start including yards gained from PI and other penalties in their recaps.

Every Rodgers or Mahomes incompletion is going to be flagged on the defense.

No Fun League.

Can we at least get Tic Tac as the gameday sponsor of illegal contact penalties? It's a win-win, as fans we get a sensible chuckle, and the League/TV Networks get to squeeze even more money out of us.

The natural evolution toward a sport resembling flag football and emphasizing speed over size.  Things change.  You can always do something else with your weekends.

Don't worry. The market will naturally  compensate with severe hits and all the illegal contact your heart desires in the *other* pro football league.
