We need to put a tent over the whole country and fumigate for MAGAts.

Canada, can we crash on your couch for a week?

6 in the last few days and reported like we're supposed to. This is our first year seeing them after a couple of years of warnings here. Creepy and nasty things.

Wouldn't it be nice if Schumer cared about protecting marriages from the Supreme Catholics and finally guaranteeing that LGBT citizens can't be discriminated against by businesses or their employers?

But no, NOW let's prioritize some goddam...bugs.

So a state that has a budget of $220 billion wants special treatment to get funding of $22 million?

I'm not against fighting invasive/destructive species, but do it more broad based or fund it more locally.

We've had that here for a few years - city inspects every tree and if you've got an ash on your property, you're required to get it vaccinated and maintain injections - if you don't comply they'll do it themselves and fine/bill you. They're past the point of farking around - but yeah would definitely be nice if it was free or subsidized

Don't be ridiculous.  They doubled the magnification.  They are only half that size.  They still like to crawl into your ear canals though.

It's not clear from TFA, but that picture Schumer is holding is actual size. Which is why I say I don't care how much it costs, kill it with fire.

The report I heard said they could be up to "the size of a paper plate." Which would be about actual size for that photo. But even if that's 2X, it still must die.

They're about an inch long. They're actually kind of pretty until they spread out all nasty.

Moaning about spending money on stuff like this (ie, solving serious problems) as if it were frivolous is part of why most intelligent and educated people think conservatives are idiots.

Stopping an invasive species that destroys food crops is kinda important.

Start a kill log for the bastards.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Inspection Service, the lanternfly is hellbent on destroying: almonds, apples, apricots, cherries, grapes, hops, maple trees, nectarines, oak trees, peaches, pine trees, plums, poplar trees, sycamore trees, walnut trees, and willow trees.

Yeah, these are unquestionably a menace that need to be eradicated.

I live in NJ. $220M wouldn't do shiat to stamp them out, let alone $22M. These bastards have won the fight already.

/I killed them whenever I saw them

Well there you go Another example of why every man woman and child over 12 needs a pushbutton ignition MAPP gas plumbers torch to burn the wings off of this nasty beotch and watch the flaming corpse spiral into the ground where you commence stomping on it and then push button that torch back to flame on and fry the remains of its corpse to white charred ash. Amen so help me God.

aaauugh, it's Miller time

First, all of those damn trees of heaven should be destroyed. Ban them and burn them. Then we can go to work on the SLFs with out their preferred host tree in the way

FTA: "Although the bug doesn't bite or sting, it can kill crops, parks and forests. The state's Department of Agriculture said the troublesome bug munches on more than 70 plant species, including grapevine, apple trees and hops"

Dear Congress, use all of it.

I'm 8/12 in the squashing game this summer.

My misses include one on the windshield, wipers did not do great justice, and one close to home that went under a shrub and my efforts to shake it out were found wanting.

They only have enough energy for two or three jumps in a row so if you keep after them you'll get a satisfying stomp.

replacementcool: Remember when Sarah Palin moaned about spending money on fruit fly research and everybody pointed out how incredibly stupid she was? That's you right now.

You live in New Zealand, right?

So your highest court isn't filled with gay-hating conservatives who've said they intend to void gay marriages, right?

And you have laws that prevent LGBT employees and customers from being subjected to discrimination, right?

Well, in America, we don't.

So you don't sit over there and tell me over here that I'm the one who sounds stupid.

There are two bills sitting in the Senate right now that could be passed to help LGBT people. Chuck Schumer can put them up for a vote. They will almost certainly pass and Biden would almost certainly sign them into law.

You really want to stand by the idea that lanternflies ought to be a higher legislative priority for Democrats than LGBT civil rights?

If so, fark you.

Murkanen:Stopping an invasive species that destroys food crops is kinda important.

Apparently so is Democrats constantly finding new reasons to push LGBT civil rights to the back of the line.

Some version of ENDA has been presented to Congress since the '70s. But somehow there are always more important priorities. All we get is you lot flying a rainbow flag in June and congratulating yourselves for being such great allies. That isn't helpful.

We don't need any more empty bullshiat gestures or excuses. We need legislation.

You think we should have to keep waiting until all other problems are solved?
