Difficulty: they'll have to ditch Modi long before that can happen.

Not until they can all put the poo in the loo.

How about 'unlikely'?

Developed as in "open bobs"?

It can be done, just look at how South Korea exploded economically after the war. It hopefully will happen since I'd love to visit India but I've been told by recent immigrants that it's neither safe or enjoyable in the more rural and beautiful areas. Tourist areas are fine for bringing income into the country but if I want to "see the sights" I'll personally be waiting for a while.

He's going to have to stop being a shiatty little tyrant first.

The way their courts work, 25 years seems rushed.

Lol this is the grandest declaration I've heard this year! I've watched so many current videos from India and I highly doubt if they can become "developed" in such a short time.

First, they need to remove all the crap from public spaces. You can't deny this when there have been documentaries made about this major problem.

Second, they need to do something about their rape crisis. Sure there are millions of Indians living there, BUT when your rape crime rate is still high in such a huge population, then you know you've got a major societal issue.

Third, they need to clean their water. It's too polluted with crap from factories, not to mention it's full of poo.

These three things alone would require years, probably decades to fix.

Anyway, one good thing I like with India right now are their action movies. Baaghi trilogy and RRR! Those movies are awesome!

There is literally no benefit for a country to move its status from developing to developed. Being classified as developing is strictly voluntary and  allows them more freedom to engage in protectionist trade policies under the WTO rules. That is why the countries with the highest per capita GDPs - the petrostates of the Middle East - are officially classified as developing despite their ostentatious wealth.

Well, you have to build a few more great works and invest in some technology tracks.
Maybe you'll get lucky and complete a world wonder and enter a golden age.

They are going to need a lot more toilets.

India is a guaranteed environmental and climate change disaster.  They are rapidly depleting their water and soil, and climate change is going to make it much, much  worse.  Other than China they lack the ability and means to solve these problems.

A developed India is never going to happen.

25 years to get half a billion adults toilet trained, and find jobs for the rest that don't involve phoning people while pretending to be Officer Steve from the Socials Securities Department and telling them they are in very big legals trouble, a warrant has been issued for their arrest for not paying taxes, and if you just send them $100 in iTunes gift certificate cards everything will be fine? Good luck!

What's the exact criteria to be considered :develooped"? I've heard some say an HDI above .80, and if that's it I can see a few countries in Latin America crossing the finish line long before India

It's going to take a hell of a lot. India's probably one of the most fractious and corrupt countries in which I've lived.

I think you could develop Zambia before you could get India anywhere close to it.

Two words:   Caste System.

Also, a country with almost as many people as China without the beehive mentality.

/ wholesale crapping in the street doesn't help either.

This.  Modi is an ethnonationalist nutjob, working only for Hindus.  Millions of non-Hindus, ESPECIALLY Muslims, are being singled out w/laws about how they dress, where & how they can worship, and even what food they can eat.  And when Modi's not making laws about them, he's whipping the Hindu majority into a violent fervor, turning them into roaming mobs looking for people to forcibly convert. It's more likely he'll turn India into a theocractic state than a developed one in 25 years.

I felt embarrassed taking my wife to the Smithsonian, I remember her asking "why are all the women painted like 12yo boys with their flat chests. Compare that to the art at Hampi and elsewhere where they START at canteloupe size and only grow from there.
I had to confess, "I think all the old artists must have been pederasts lusting for boys they put wigs and rouge on."

Nah. They're environment is fundamentally farked, they're now the most overpopulated country, corruption runs to the bone, religious hostility high, and basic sanitation is a pipe dream. This is an untenable situation and they're gonna have some devastating shiat happen long before progress is made.

This is absolutely true and it's a farking shame when Indian culture is finally getting its due here in America.

Yeah, naw. Maybe add a zero to that number.

Pick any one of these economic and cultural issues and it will hold any country back:

Corruption (political and business)
Women's Rights (cultural vs. legislative)
Illiteracy/Brain Drain
Pollution
Basic Sanitation
Healthcare system
Infrastructure
Poverty
Agricultural Distress
Language
Water Access/Rights

India has all of these problems and on a scale of 1.4B people and growing.

The Miracle on the Rhine and The Miracle on the Han happened on a much smaller scale in terms of population, square acreage and with huge assistance from (and benefit to) the West post-war. South Korea had ~20MM people in 1953 when they got started in earnest - which would be like convincing a population the size of New York to work together to solve the problem.

Modi's a far-right bigot who isn't going to embrace tech or science, so step 1 of that 25-year plan is electing someone else.

All I see around here are a few half-assed restaurants and frequent headlines about Indian doctors being busted for Medicare fraud.

The term "developed" is a moving target.

It used to mean "consumer capitalism." Now it might mean "liberal democratic technocracy." And, unfortunately, we are finding out that the most developed democracies are backsliding quickly into "pluto-kleptocracy" or different flavors of it.

Good luck India. It is nice to have goals. Maybe "developed" is vague enough to be achievable.

I have worked with many many Indians, both nationals and citizens.   They pretty much all  said don't visit  unless you know someone. And then stick to tourist areas unless you know what your doing.

They don't drink the water either.

That's what happens when you have a large immigration of the people. Their next generation starts to be taken more seriously.
