He pled not guilty? Odd.

NewportBarGuy: He pled not guilty? Odd.

It's procedural, we all know he did it. But him listening to his lawyer kind of undermines any insanity plea. He's not crazy, he's passionate about his religion, and willing to follow the letter of the law, even if it means breaking secular law and/or killing someone.

Kind of sounds familiar, especially in a country where abortion providers have been murdered or had their offices burned down by religious zealots.

Yeah, pleading "not guilty" often doesn't mean "I didn't do it" as much as it means "I can explain."    It's still a rather strange defense that I don't feel is likely to work.

So he got stabbed, will likely recover (though probably not fully physically, likely his mind is fine*), and will wear a badass eyepatch for the rest of his life?

The Indian-born British novelist remained in hospital on Sunday in a critical condition, but had been removed from a ventilator, which allowed him to talk and demonstrate that "his usual feisty and defiant sense of humour remains intact"

I guess he's in no rush to die.

Ronnie and Co. used the Iran hostage crisis as a party platform and then turned around and sold them weaponry, completely hate-free.

The attempted assassin of Rushdie is the Islamic extremist version of the MAGA extremist; they are different flavors of the same ice cream. The guy who stabbed Rushdie was not ordered directly by Iran, nor did Iran have any direct communication telling him what to do or assisting him. Iran just inspired him through their religious cult and reward, but they have plausible deniability. Same with the guy in Cincinnati who thought nail guns could penetrate bulletproof glass. Trump did not call him and tell him. He was not ordered or financed by the Trump people. He was inspired by the rhetoric of Trump and his sycophants. Again plausible deniability.

In the end the only difference between Islamic Terrorists and MAGA terrorists is the "god" they kill in the name of.

There is no reason except the Saudis hate Iran as a regional rival and their Shia apostacy.  The GQP need a bad guy and Iran was right there. If it weren't for the Saudi thing, they'd like them for helping make Carter a one term president.

I watched Rushdie give a talk three years ago in an event put on by a local bookstore.  I was sitting about fifteen feet away from him and there didn't seem to be any security around apart from one unarmed guard.  The threats against him seemed pretty far in the past.  But the Iranians put a target on him for life.

Yes, it will "GO ON YOUR PERMANENT RECORD YOUNG MAN!" which means nobody looks at it for the rest of your school years and ends up in a document storage closet behind the boiler for 50 years.  Thrown out when the building finally gets a physical plant upgrade.

Yes.  A clandestine operation to provide money to the far right-wing Contras in their struggle agains the left wing Sandanistas. The Sandanistas were the more or less legitimate governing body of Nicaragua.  Congress had passed a bill that specifically forbade American funding in Nicaraguan regime change which Reagan signed.  Oliver North ran weapons to Iran to fund the Contras in direct violation.  When the whole thing was exposed Reagan, under questioning by Congress claimed he didn't remember to numerous questions.  North and Poindexter were convicted of various charges as were others but their convictions were overturned due to immunity deals, and in North's case , the argument that the jury was tainted by his televised testimony before congress.  In short a LOT of Reagan's top offials got indicted and were letgo on 'technicalities.  A handful were not let off the hook...until Bush the First pardoned them.  Then, as now the GOP handwaved away the seriousness of the affair insisting it was meŕely a lack of judgement.  The 'old boys network' looked after their own.

He's trying to conflate society's attempts to move away from not openly celebrating white supremacy and misogyny to a religious extremist attempting to kill someone for saying mean things about their invisible friend.

It's your standard false equivalence argument to deny the positive value of one action by associating it with something reprehensible.

If you can't imagine the Christian Taliban taking advantage of laws intended to curb offensive speech, then you simply aren't very imaginative or bright.

Europe's managed just fine for decades without lionizing nazis as good members of society with valuable things to say, so if America fails to deliver on laws that prevent the outcome you're predicting it would be due to a deliberate failure to avoid it by those in office.

This idea that not having laws against offensive speech = "lionizing Nazis" is doing all the lifting here.
