Organs deteriorate extremely fast after death. I'd imagine that, whenever possible, they'll keep a brain dead patient on life support until they're ready to cut, then start harvesting as soon as they're pronounced dead.

Anyway, dibs on the liver. Oh right, she had a bottle of hooch in the car. Nevermind.

She was only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. Now she is all dead.

She was declared brain dead on Friday, which in California, is legally dead.

She was kept on life support to see if any of her organs were able to be donated.

Not even a little bit. Not here. Not on Fark.

After that fire, wouldn't her organs be a little over done?

2022-08-15 10:15:55 AM
I know they don't tell people who their donor is unless the donor family is okay with it, and I do have a very morbid curiosity about these things, but I hope her family is able to one day say, "she destroyed a house and herself but in doing so saved 11 people with organ donations and various transplants."

Mom got a donor lung - so familiar with the process.  They definitely have all recipients pre-identified/in 'ready' state, and alternates, for the viable organs and the pilots on standby by the time the patient passes.  It was two hours from the time we got the call, the organ was approved (The organ(s) have to be approved to transport from the removing surgeon, and then re-approved by the implanting surgeon.  And our first go around, Mom's surgeon saw some microscopic infection in the lung and wouldn't do the surgery.  So even getting it there quickly isn't always a slam dunk.), and she was in surgery.

It's a very odd process - but I'm really wondering which of her organs were still viable.  Maybe kidney or liver - but that fire - how would it have kept organs in a shape to donate?

She's not gonna use them and she's young enough that the organs are likely in very good shape (except probably the liver). She's likely going to save or dramatically improve a dozen or so lives this way.

They are on "life support" the whole time till the end.  Blood needs to keep flowing as long as possible during the "parting-out"

I believe that's why they kept her on life support after declaring her brain dead.
To determine if they were viable and to rinse any drugs in her system, out.

No, you're right. There are a lot of people who need organs and not enough organs. The TFA could have been a little more tactful about it is all.

I believe even tissues can be used. I nearly cut my finger off a few months ago (took a lot of the skin and stuff under the skin) and the initial repair with the nearly severed tissue was not successful. I ended up getting a bovine matrix graft but apparently a cadaver graft was also a possibility. So it doesn't have to be full organs, necessarily.

I think they do tell them how many organs went to how many people, just not their names.

Oh ok, but they never tell recipient who their donor was, right? I honestly have no idea how this works.

I didn't know she suffered from DID.  Probably why rehab was never going to work.

Side note: I did not know Mini Coopers were so explodey.  Wonder what she hit in the garage, aside from an immobile wall, that started the violent fire?

2022-08-15 1:40:43 PM
Well I would have donated an organ to her back in the day. Of course it would depend on the day of the week and what she was into at the time.

Gas line. Almost all older construction has gas appliances.
