C'mon, guys. We discussed this last night. American politics are supposed to be a warning, not a model.

I thought Brexit was the warning-not-a-model for the US

Do it, landslide for Labour next election.
The Tory party may want him to stay but the country doesn't.

This strategy was obvious when he refused to actually step down as Prime Minister.

"Lucy Coxall, a project manager for a London design company, who had travelled from Wiltshire, said she was genuinely undecided and irritated at media reports that Truss had it in the bag already. "It is ridiculous to suggest it is already over. I really want to hear what the candidates have to say," she said."

Imagine that being your worry over an election.

Amateurs.

It's a popularity contest for Tory party members between a Margaret Thatcher tribute act and a brown person. It's over.

I get the impression Lucy is the kind of project manager whose projects are always reported as perfectly on track, until they suddenly become a dumpster fire.

In the top tier, two men sat observing wryly. They said they were both remainers and did not warm to either candidate. One of them told the Observer: "I don't even vote Conservative any more. I just haven't given up my membership. I couldn't vote for either of them."
This is the fundamental problem the Tories have, they alienated all the Europeans. Not just the ones in Europe.

"I'm afraid we just don't get the quality of people coming into politics these days," was his glum assessment before proceedings began.

An international problem.  Although the Founding Fathers weren't too kind to each other ... until after they retired.

That's what happens when the head of state is selected by a very small minority that comprises only the most radical members of the current party. There is absolutely no incentive to select somebody that the whole country would agree with.

John Major's still alive.

Head of government. The head of state is the Queen.

So the Torries have three choices.

/A brown guy whose religious conservatism is the wrong brand of religious conservatism and they want Froot Loops not Apple Jacks damn it.

//A woman, and their club specifically has a "no girls allowed" sign up over the door, damn it, because last thing they want is some dame bossing them around and telling them they can't have hookers and strippers in their smoke filled backrooms after they are done making deals.

///A white guy who is a total idiot and who got them into this mess because of his incompetence.  Naturally, this is their favored option, because it avoids the problems of a brown non-Jesusy person, and a woman.

I infamously lose most political bets I make to the point I've stopped making them, but fark yeah I'd be betting on Boris at this point.

Wasn't he just forced to resign for being a national embarrassment? And they think it's a great idea to run a rehashed national embarrassment as their candidate because their voters are sexist and racist?

Damn... the Tories really are like the Republicans.

He's not an embarrassment to the somewhat 165.000 voters who'll pick the prime minister.

They actually LOVE him for the fact that he misses off the vast majority of UK citizens. They are going to vote for him because he's THEIR asshole, and there is nothing a British person hates more, than someone they think are of a lower class.

This article makes no mention of any kind of Boris Johnson comeback. It just interviews one person who wishes Johnson could stay.

It really doesn't matter. The media decides our elections now.  And the Tory Leaders know it.

Otherwise, they'd have chosen one of the leadership candidates who were not tainted by being close to Boris.

Given how he was forced out, it should be political suicide to pick somebody so close to him that they must have been an accomplice to his immoral and unethical actions.  They should have gone with a nicely insulated candidate.

Choosing somebody that the public already associates with Boris only matters if they feel the need to engage with the electorate.  They clearly do not.

it might be that The owners of the media have once again promised to pursue another campaign of violent character assassination against whoever they are up against in the next general election.

Or it might be that they have seen how bad things are geting and actually want to lose, so they can spend a few years blaming everything bad on a new Labour government to make sure they get in next time. (They've done it before, after all - look how they made bank off Labours "financial crises" which was actually a global crises)...

My understanding of Liz Truss is she is a fine blend of BJ and DJT, not wanting to pay any taxes and willing to blow up the government to do it. She is too unhinged and conservative while Sunak isn't unhinged and conservative enough for being a direct successor/replacement for BJ. I can only hope this means the Tories will lose the next election.

Why is he head of Labour again?  Did they just want someone so bland, they wouldn't cause controversy while people forgot about Corbyn?

The UK is as stuck with the Tories due to an obscenely antiquated form of elections as the US is stuck with the GOP for the same reason.

It's the only explanation I can muster. Plus, I have to assume Labour has a fairly shallow bench, having been out of power for twelve years now

Some civilized countries have an Established Church. Denmark is the only example that comes to mind, but there could be others.  In Denmark they have civil parishes, just like in Louisiana, but as I said, civilized.

Being the "only one who's a big enough idiot to want to take the job" is a proven form of job security.
